On the road again

So I picked up my 17 years dormant Peugeot from my LBS today. It cost me about $100 to get her back on the road not including helmet, lock and trunk rack. I took it for a short spin and I must say it felt good, short as it was. I eased backinto the drops and got going pretty good, no cpu on the bike yet but I wasn't standing completely still. The best info I've gotten from C/V and my Dad (the original owner) is that it's an '82 PH10. Not sure of the frame size, it's about a 32" standover and it's a touch tall for me so I'd bet it's a 58 or 60cm (Dad is 6'2" I'm 6'). I'm gonna take it for a spin tomorrow morning in place of my normal workout. The loop I'm taking allows for either 5 or 10 miles depending on how I feel.

Honestly she's pretty ugly right now, lot's of little rust spots that need to be cleaned up. Once that's done what then? Primer? I can't see spending the money to restore it at this point.

The impression I got from C&V is that it was a slightly above entry level bike, it has center pull brakes and the shifters are at the neck so it was more of a touring bike than a true racer. I must say it did feel suprisingly light though. I'll need to get new toe clips as my feet have gotten wider with the years and the gut.

Honestly she's happy I'm getting on the road and she's considering getting a bike too. We'll see how that works out, we'll rent her one while we're on vacation this week.

Cool! Good for her and tell her I'm encouraging her to get out and ride with ya! It's good for the marriage and everything!

Just a bit of advice for riding with the wife though! Try to stop and rest before she's whupped, and try not to make her use the bushes if you can avoid it. Let her set the pace if she's slower than you and never let her know that she's slower than you like to ride! If she's faster, definitely let her set the pace as long as you can, the conditioning will be good for ya!:D

Run a search for 'oxalic acid' (and in either C & V or the MTB forum). It can do amazing things for your bike.

Ride one is under my belt. 5 mi's, no biggie I know but it's a start. Felt good. Front derailer is rubbing the chain and is a little sluggish shifting into the higher gear but other than that the old girl ran as smooth as I was riding her.

So I took the old girl (my bike, not the wife) down to the Cape this week. First ride we rented a bike for the wife and a trailer for Spartan113 and went down the CC Rail Trail for a little ride. I noticed in fairly short order that I was getting a lot of noise out of the front derailer. Turns out the position of it dropped about 1/4" and it was grinding a bit. I was able to fix it but shortly after the shifting cable broke so my 12 spd turned into a 6 speed minus the grinding. I was able to get in a second ride of about 10-12 miles with no other issues other than having to really turn fast to get any speed going. I'll take her back to the LBS monday and get all the cables replaced and have the front derailler checked. I'll also hit the bookstore for a repair book, any good ones you might suggest?
