Came in yesterday and was installed today. I ordered this to replace the Trek Interchange rack that came stock on the 520. No one in my shop including me could understand why this rack was so expensive and why anyone would buy this over a Axiom rack that was rated for double the weight. Because I could get it for much less than retail I decided to just buy it. When I got it I was surprised at the overall quality of the build of the rack. It's made out of cromoly so it's double the weight of an aluminum rack but say you're touring in the rural area of India and the rack breaks, you should be able to find someone to weld it back together. With other racks, if they break then they're done. One of the guys at my shop who did some touring a couple of years ago on the same bike used an Axiom rack and said that he bent it on tour. Although Axioms say that they're rated for 150lbs the Nice Rack is much more solid but regardless I would never put 150lbs of gear on a single rack! Now that I have the rear installed and like the quality and build I think I will order the front rack next. If you have the cash and want the best rack you can buy I must say the Surly Nice Rack is totally the way to go. I can't wait to actually use this thing on tour.
They are nice. But they are also heavy! I have the front and rear on my LHT. Makes the thing a tank!
Chromo is mucho more expensive to purchase than aluminum tubing. And at least around me it has to be special ordered (obviously not a problem in the far east factory setting). There are more joints, not to mention bends in the thing than in a bicycle, though little post machining. There is also a surprising amoun of net tubing length, close to what one has in a bike frame. I don't know which finishing method is more expensive, anodising or powder, powder is more home shop friendly.
On the front rack the one thing that bothered me was the shortness of the top platform. I like a top platform a lot for the front, but the way they chop it off in favour of the brakes made the Surly front rack a non-started for me.
I also bought the Surly racks. Started with ther ear than bought the front. Cromoly +1. Extra weight - not that much more than alum tubing racks on a touring bike. Agree they are well made and easy to repair. I just like them.:D. A satisfied user.

Have'em both. Like'em both.
Good strong racks. And the front rack top platform comes in handy for me when commuting and I have to unexpectedly bring a package home from work.
