Bicycle Mechanics - Hub problem

I'm not too familiar with diff hubs, and setups so i need some help.

#1) i bought a wheel with a rear deore hub. Are all deores quick release??

#2) My 2002 norco 250 has horizantil dropouts. You can't run QR with horizantil drop outs can you?

#3) So far im not doing so welll, so i'll assume i need t get a new hub. What are my options for a normal bolt on hub thats disk compatible.

Anyone? I'm losing sleep over this trying to find an answer. Im not having the best of luck with this wheel and i've already been waiting 2 weeks or more :irritated

Can you post a pic? Just about any hub with a hollow axle will accept a QR skewer. And what are horizontal dropouts? :confused:

Sorry no pics on hand. A horizantal dropout means, the slot for the wheel is like a BMX bike, it runs from fron to back , and is about 2.5" long, so u can locate the tire anywhere in that area. I'm worried that the wheel will get knocked crooked withought the snug fitting conventional dropout (vertical).

The drop outs appear to be the standard single speed horizontal dropouts. Yes the Deore hub would take a QR.. now if it will work with those dropouts I do not know.

I guess you'll just have to really eyeball that thing right when you put it on. Just make sure that you tighten the QR well when you install the wheel. Just give the nut a few more turns before you secure the lever. I guess it'll just be a little tougher to get on and off.

Yes, but do they ONLY take QR, or could I bolt them on?

Oh, I see what you're saying. Of course. If you can get a stud and two nuts, you can certainly substitute that for skewers. Just make sure you got washers to protect the frame at the dropouts.

Your my hero Chi. That was my new idea, and u confirmed it. Although, this turns out to be an interesting topic.(I've done my research) and QR has been used in this situation, but was though to be not safe becouse under extreme braking, the wheel would fly off, in rare cases. But I consider myslef prety knoledgeable in the sport, and remember, in a few cases, both races and movies, nutted wheels came right off as well. I'm still in search of the best method. I have seen homemade dropouts bolted to frames that used normal QR, but are much diff, and stronger than both nutts and QR. If anyone wants u can get the picture.

Hey urbanking.

If you're going to use that bike for DJ's or slalom, you DON'T want to use QR's, the amount of torque you place on your cranks will cause your wheel to slip.

What you can do, and it's relatively easy, is to replace the hollow axle on your Deore hub with a solid axle that is longer and accepts regular axle nuts. Most any decent shop can order you the correct axle from any of their distributors (QBP is the one I use). You can use the same cones, spacers and lock nuts.

I do recommend you get some BIG washers, I think they're called "Frame Savers". Again, any decent shop should be able to get what you need.

I did the same thing to my hub, here's a pic: this had a standard QR axle in it, and I swapped it over.

I know someone tha owns a nut and bolt company, could i just look for the right axel, nut and washers there?

P.S. I'm desperate to ride, would it be alright to ride it with the QR for a week or so until the parts come in? I dont have much experience with hubs.

To answer your hub question Atom Labs Aircorps os a rear disc nutted hub, Gusset Jury Disc is as well. Hadley makes a axle conversion kit for 10-17 and thru axle hubs to switch from quick release to nutted. Of course most LBS should be able to hook you up easily enough.
