Fifty Plus (50+) - Things I've learned in my first month back...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

OK, I've made progress in remembering how to ride. In fact, some weird old habits have kicked it without me knowing it. Today I went to use non-existant downtube shifters. My feet go into the clips automatically sometimes, before I think about it. I hit deep sand today and kept the bike upright easily in a major skid.

But I've also learned some new things, or remembered things I've forgotten:

1. When you see a lot of birds in the air, close your mouth because the air is filled with hard little insects.

2. Look back when you see a car in your mirror, so they know you see them.

3. Delete all classical music containing an organ from your ipod, because it will invariably come on when you're going up a hill and you'll think of your own funeral.

4. Although Frank Zappa is a genius, his classical album "Strictly Genteel" sucks for cadence. It is good, however, as a scary sound track going through swamp lands.

5. Not only is the taste of electrolyte drinks bad, it's the mucousy texture, like it's 40 swigs of backwash.

6. Porcupines move really, really slow.

7. I have 7* gears on each ring. I kept forgetting the top and bottom one. Once I remembered I had "one left", it made shifting on hills WAY easier.

Blimey! You have learnt a lot in your first month back.

Only part I have to disagree with is on the electrolyte drinks. Just try another 20 or so and you may find one That is only disgusting after the second bottle.

:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

Can you hear approaching cars when you are listening to the ipod while on the bike? I keep my left ear keenly tuned toward traffic on my left, and the sound of another cyclist or walker (the latter if on a trail) approaching me from behind. I'm afraid I'd be more tuned in to the Ipod than to what's going on around me. Just asking...... maybe your riding conditions are much less distracting than mine. Or, maybe your ears multi-task better than mine. :)

Anyway, sounds like you've had a good month. How long had it been before you started riding again?

Sorry! I didn't find this unanswered question until Tom Bombadil made a reference to Minnesotans not answering back and I thought I'd better check old threads...

I don't use it in the cities. But when I'm up north I'll see just a handful of cars on my ride, and it's lovely to play music when the scenery is so pretty. Even then, I only put it in my right ear, and it's very quiet.

I hadn't ridden seriously for about 15 years....
