Southern California - GMR Ride Reports and Pix Please! July 21st

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'll be posting my pix in a second. Thought the ride was great. Maybe I had a good day cause felt good all the way. Myabe had something to do with the early start and cool air. The sun was shining and looked warm but the early morning air was good to me! Of course I'm not as fast as Carbon White Dude, but I felt good!

Kind of a bummer on the return. Lee's bike wouldn't shift into the high cog, so we stopped about 5 times to make adjustments. Kind of ruined the bombing down the hill part. Part of the reason I ride a cheap bike. Those $5,000 roadies are too sensitive. His first ride on $1200 wheels and they went crooked, bummer! Met a couple more forum riders and overall a good time.

What were the final stats, Beanz (miles, elev)? Did it get toasty warm up there?

I like John, because he's not afraid to rock those old-school knee-highs. ;)

I think the ususal is right under 5k of climbing for the 42 miles. But there were a few that went up to the lifts. Didn't seem warm at all IMO. Nice and cool but sunny!:D

I see Travis! Was Asia there too? Wish I would've joined... I talked myself out of it saying it would be too hot. That's the slacker in me.

Well this was my first trip up GMR and I had a blast! I met a bunch of cool forumites and a few cool guys from OCRR. Unfortunately, due to road work, I didn't get rolling until 725 so I pretty much solo'ed up most of the hill.

This was my first time up GMR and first climb over 2k. So when I started I did not think I would make it up because it seemed the first few miles were alot worse than than advertised 'easy' grade. I kept punching away up the hill and took a few short drink and water breaks when my HR would go too high, so it was probably good I went alone. The only concern I had was a technical, I was going too slow to crash! A few times I wanted to turned back, but I pressed on,

I met Octico and MadMike at the summit just before Baldy. Luckily, large parts of GRR have downhills to rest or I wouldn't have made it. I pulled in and met the rest of the group at Baldy, and everyone was really cool. Some went up to the ski lifts (I wasn't one of them) but after everyone returned we all went down hill.

About 3 miles into my descent I hit a rock at 31 mph (according to my EDGE) and my front tire popped. I tried to turn my bike but it wouldn't respond and I was going straight off the road. I hit the brakes and tried to stop quickly but I went into a berm on the side of the road. I dont remember much but I must have endo'ed my bike as both my brifters have scrapes. Luckily I just focused on not landing on my head and fell perfectly for a crash. My leg and arm was cut up but everything else is okay, including my bike (the important thing). It probably sounds worse than it was, landing into a loose dirt berm really helped me. Now that I have my yearly crash over with I can be reckless for the rest of the year :) jk.

When I got up, one of the riders from OCR, Jerry, helped my replace my tire and patched it (the front tire is torn) which was a huge help, I couldn't thank him enough for helping me get down the hill. Since I used up all my tubes and canisters he made sure I made it down.

Regardless of going down (it happens to everyone), I still had a blast and look forward to doing it again, I was surprised I made it but next time its going to be about the ski lifts!

For anyone who's curious about the elevation, attached is my EDGE 305 data from the ride:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/episode/view.do?episodePk.pkValue=3389802

Lap 1 is the data to the summit, lap 2 is time at Baldy and the downhill. 2:36 minutes 4200 ft getting to Baldy.

:( Sorry to hear but glad you're okay (other than the cuts).

Everyone else, great pics of all of your hot faces (hot as in yum ;)) I was riding out by the coast, climbing in the Santa Monicas and plan to post a few pics in a few, but it was hot out there! Glad to see you guys did so well in the San Gabriels.

First of all, big THANK YOU to Rick for organizing this ride. People tend to wuss out in July when it comes to inland routes, so it is nice to have somebody who can think straight and is not afraid of the heat. :p BTW, it wasn't hot at all. I got to the start late, so I had to ride most of the time by myself. Not necessarily a bad thing because I could push myself pretty hard chasing the rest of the pack. The result of the push was 57 minutes to the first gate and 1 h 55 mins at the village. I got to see some familiar faces from the "Slackers century" and met some new ones - Ed at the start and Travis and Lee (Mr Beanz's buddy) at the village. Nice bike, Travis! :D As for pictures - I'm a lousy photographer. You can check some of the pictures taken by Art at http://www.ocrebels.com/photo.htm (scroll down to Glendora Mountain Road).

Finally, the pic that will be mailed to Jimmy's wife if he doesn't supply me with some new tires and bartape!:D

Hey Beanz, you are getting greedier by the hour! :D After the ride you were prepared to settle for "In-n-Out" burger, now you want tires and bartape. By the end of the week you'll try to weed a red Ferrari out of me. :D How about I make you a deal: you come to the Palomar ride next week and I buy you a 7 course lunch (6-pack and a burger)? :D

Great ride today, and it really didn't get hot until we were back off the mountain (in Glendora). I must have been ahead of Beanz on the road! Saw him at the start and finish, but not that long middle bit!

Good to see Maria back on her bike again after many weeks of hiking. Sorry I missed James! I saw George at the start, but not after . . . That's one of the problems with going to the ski lifts is that I didn't see a lot of folks at the village.

Thankfully, the ride to the lifts seemed a little easier today. Started off with Jon, Ken, Chuck and Doug, then Chuck had the first of his two flat tires, Doug had cramps in his legs, and Ken was just a bit slower, so I was the 2nd one to the top, but pretty far behind Jon (WhiteCarbonDude).

Jon went back down as soon as I got to the top, so I stopped and waited for Malcom, Ken, Dr. Jerry (the guy who helped FuriousFerret - Chris) and Doug. Nice and cool at the high elevations! Had a flat on the way back and none of the 3 tubes in my bag (two patched and one new) held air, but thankfully Jim gave me a tube!

Saw Beanz, Jimmy, many others back at Boulder Springs (more photos on the Rebel website if you look quick!).

Overall a great ride, with the only down-sides = flat tires and Chris's crash!

First let me start by saying thanks to Rick for organizing a great ride. The weather was great, could not have been better. This was my first time riding up GMR so I did know what to expect. I took my time going up just like everyone told me (not that I could have gone up much faster). I rode up and back with MadMike with one 'D', really nice guy. I have to say the more I ride with the BF group the more I realize what a group we have here. It seems like everyone is watching out for each other. Chris I am sorry to hear about your accident I hope you heal quickly.

FInally MR. Beanz is a stud he just cranks that big body up those hills like one's business. Oh yeah did mention he is the BIGGEST sandbagger ... literally ;)

Rick; Thanks so much for organizing another wonderful trip to GMR.
Big John; thanks for hanging out with me on a brutal way up (despite of what everybody said here I thought it was quite warm yesterday), and Jimmy thanks for having an eye on me on a way down.

It is always so wonderful to be in a company of great friends and to meet new people and make new friends.

Hi Maria,
Good to hear you enjoyed the ride! I was a little worried that all your hiking would slow you down, but I guess not! I didn't see you after the start since it took me an extra hour and a half to ride to the Ski Lifts and back to the village, plus you were gone when I got back!

Also good to hear that Big John and Jimmy were watching over you :), plus Beanz took some beautiful photos of you, so yes, it's all good!

I rode to The Village (mostly) with Ken (it was his first GMR ride), then to the Ski Lifts (mostly) with Doug (his first ride to the Lifts).

This was also my first experience with GMR. I liked it! It was nice to meet everyone and learn about this forum too - I didn't know about it before. FF - sorry to hear about the crash and glad your OK!! Rick, your welcome for the tube, thanks for gettting us OCRR'rs out. Want me to pick up a couple tubes before Tuesday night?? Thanks for all the concern from everyone, I feel fine today so I'm pretty sure I'm home free.

The nice thing is I was able to convince my wife I needed a new wheelset and tires...I got a new set of Mavic Open Pros and a set of Michelin Carbons coming in. I've been trying to replace my Alex rims for awhile now, and my front tire was shredded from the accident. I finally got all my 'bad' components I bought with the bike gone.

I'll personally ask Gina to sign your pass for Saturday :D. Tell her there will be no drinking, no gambling, no strippers - just a real gentlemen's ride. :D
I'll post a link to the SoCal Velo web site on the other thread. Hope it will give you an idea what it is like.

A, B, and C
D is an obviously false answer because 'Gentlemen's Clubs' allow drinking and strippers, and if in Vegas they allow gambling. Also, most of the time we all act gentlemanly when we are on any ride (ladies first, changing the ladies tubes for them, etc.), and not only because we are perverts.

Looks like that photo was taken just before the climb up to the shed (where the road crews store their equipment). Kind of scary that I've been up GMR so often that I can identify a piece of road like that.

Then again . . . I could be wrong!

You were just waiting for Nacy, otherwise you would have blown my doors off!

I thought I'd take it easy with Mt.Tam looming (Aug. 4th), but I was riding with (GMR Virgin) Ken, and I rode faster than I had planned. Ken did make it all the way to the top of the Lifts, which is a first for an OCRR GMR Virgin! We were 1:50 into the Village.
