Why do people who subject themselves to McDonalds "food" buy bottled water?

Why does Washington DC, supposedly the nerve center of American freedom prohibit its residents from owning serious firepower, or even so much as allow guns to be kept ready for home defense?

Why does a soccer mom need an 11mpg SUV to drop off her brats at school?

What is the point of a hot water heater? Why do we heat already hot water?

Now, more stupid questions please.

I can answer #4 because I have been a Master Plumber for 30 odd years. Technically it is called a "water heater". Not a hot water heater. It can be also called a "hot water tank". A device for the storage of hot water until needed. The box that each water heater comes in states, "40 [or 50 or whatever size] Gallon Water Heater".

Why is change begrudged and not accepted and dealt with?

Why does religion play such a large part in so many people's decisions even to the point of what car they should buy?

Why do some people feel that respect should be given and not earned?

Why has political correctness become so accepted?

Why has health and safety killed children's ability to play as I can remember playing?

Why do people insist on building houses on flood plains and then complain when they're flooded out?

Why do people bash Americans for the very same problems they've brought upon themselves (obesity, drugs, gun violence, packaging within packaging, inability to walk places)?

Why have people become more insistent that they're right and you're dead?

Why, when dealing with urban sprawl, do people insist on building out and not up?

Why is no good deed un-punished?

Why do bad things happen to good people?

Why is government reactive and very rarely pro-active?

Another question about water heaters, why do people have them instead of on demand type systems? They run only when you need them, and last far, far longer.

Initial expense. The inline water heaters service one faucet while the tanks can service the entire home.

Allen, they actually have ones powerful enough to service whole houses. Perhaps not American-sized McMansions, but they work for homes of modest size. Not popular in the states.

Another question about water heaters, why do people have them instead of on demand type systems? They run only when you need them, and last far, far longer.

wfin may be able to answer this more accurately but, from what I learned a few weeks ago by a "water heater guru" (forgot his name) from the CA Energy Commission, from a practical standpoint, "on-demand" water heaters may not be as "efficient" as many would believe. The on-demand water heaters have a lead time from when the faucet is turned on to the time hot water is actually received meaning more wasted water because they are typically based on a certain flow rate being reached and heater to reach a specific temperature to actually heat the water. Additionally, there are electronics involved with on-demand water heaters that run 24/7. In contrast, a "tank water heater" already has the hot water stored and ready to deliver and the time it takes for you to receive hot water is dependent on the amount of piping between it and you and only heats the water whenever the temp falls below a certain point.

It really depends on your water usage. If you need LOTS of water at any one time (i.e. to fill a really huge tub with hot water, endless hot shower sessions, etc...) then "on-demand" is the way to go. If you need small amounts of hot water at a time (i.e. when washing hands, filling up a glass, etc...) tank water heaters might make more sense.

You can check out this study (http://www.energy.ca.gov/title24/2008standards/documents/2006-05-18_workshop/2006-05-11_GAS_WATER.PDF)to for a better explanation as well. In it, they recommend they actually downgrade the efficiencies stated for tankless water heaters.

Sorry to be so wordy...

Finally something you are talking about that I actually know of. (Because I rarely understand much of what you say.) The "Interstates" in Hawaii are actually the H1, H2, and H3. The H stands for highway, not interstate.

Another question about water heaters, why do people have them instead of on demand type systems? They run only when you need them, and last far, far longer.

The initial expense for an on-demand heater is quite high. 3 to 4 times the cost of a conventenial heater. To retro fit is even more money, 5 to 10 times the cost of original "clunker".

I once asked a moronic employee of mine one time, "Does your brain hurt when you think or what?". He didn't show up for work and I called him. He said, "I only had two dollars and I needed cigarettes and gas to go to work, so I bought the cigs".

So ever since that point in my life, I have always wondered the above question.

Maybe I will ask my Magic 8 Ball!
