Where would one go about getting some traditionally dutch bicycle parts such as full chaingaurds and those fenders with pie shaped coverings. Can these parts be easily installed? Would I be ruining an english 3 speed bike that is right now all original if I put stuff like this on the bike?

thanks in advance,
Scott

What "English 3-speed" do you own, that doesn't already have full fenders and decent chain guard (http://www.cyclesofyesteryear.com/cycleshop/raleigh%20classic%201.jpg)?

The Dutch bikes have 28" tires, so those "skirt protectors" wouldn't match the radius of your 26" bike.

Edit: Wow, these guys have full chain covers for either size wheel, and full kick stand! (http://www.trbexports.com/cycle/chain_covers.htm) Wonder what the prices are?

I posted my bike in the vintage bike section. It's the hawthorne hercules one. And I totally agree with you on the chain guard and fenders. The chain guard on that bike is probably my favorite part. I've just always like the way the dutch chain guards completely cover everything. The upgrade would be completely unnecessary and might sacrifice the integrity of the bike, however, that doesn't stop me from wanting a "skirt protector" (I never knew what those things were called) and dutch chain guard.

The 28" would be a problem though. So I guess the only solution would be custom which would be much too hard, especially when I already have a good fenders.

Anyway, would I run into any trouble fitting the full on chain guard thing (is there a special name for this?) on, and where would I find one anyway?

I was able to get a front rack from http://www.dutchbikes.us/
Chain guards are hard to fit to bikes not designed for them. They usually have mount points brazed onto the frames. One exception is the Hebie chaincase (http://www.hebie.de/html/en/start_de.php5), which "floats" on the chain, and can be picked up through The Urbane Cyclest (http://ucycle.com/index.php) out of Toronto.

Lots of Raleighs were delivered with full chaincases exactly like the one in that first link, so fitting one to an English 3 speed would not be total heresy. Follow Ornery's link for one of those, and fitting them is pretty easy - they come with clamps for the main tubes etc. The only time they do become a hassle, however, is when you want to service the drivetrain. The might look like a one piece deal, but they're not, they actually come apart in about 6 pieces. It's not a big deal to cope with, but if you have to do anything at the roadside, it'd be a bit of a nightmare. None of this makes me want to get rid of mine, however - see my bike below:

Velo Orange sells a bunch of stuff like that, although not specifically Dutch brands.

I looked at your bike in the C&V forum, and it's not your typical English 3 speed.....

After repeated research trying to find dress guards for my vintage Dutch "Simplex - Neoluxe" imported bicycle, I have finally located the accessory online for separate sale on the Gazelle UK website under "shop online" which links you to the "Dutch Bike Shop" site. Dress guards come in clear or black for 26" or 28" mud guards - standard on most 3 speed English or American guards - and should fit your bicycle as they simply clip on the rim of your existing mud guards. Presto cool look and practical as well. Yours for about $20.00 US plus shipping.

Check it out if you are still looking:

Also listed is a chain guard in green for about $40.00 US:

There is a thread in this form titled "Full Chaincase" that I started long ago. It pretty much documents my attempt to find and fit a full chaincase on my Dunelt 3 speed. I woul wound up getting the chaincase from Yellow Jersey and fitting it with some home made brackets.

Skirt guards (http://morganimports.com/products/flyingpigeon/flyingpigeon.html) are also available from Morgan Imports in NC (http://morganimports.com/index.html).

Electra has coat guards and the method to install them is to drill holes in the coat guard edges and fender and secure them with zip ties. Full case chainguards can be obtained off the UK eBay. A full case chainguard has an end section that is removed to secure the guard through the crankcase the chain is dropped inside and fastened and the end section is then pushed into place. The crank is then covered by the round dust cover on the front of the chainguard.

If only I could figure out how to order from www.fietspunt.nl

I tried. Your best bet is classic-cycles.de in Germany. Anything they don't list on the website, just ask.

Check out Hollandbikeshop.com , in particular their City bikes (stadsfiets) section. http://hollandbikeshop.com/fietsonderdelen-stadsfiets_cid506.html

They will dispatch to the USA.

I've recently ordered some stuff from them and I was satisfied. English language is available... and a tip: on other sites where English isn't an option, view in Google Chrome and it will translate for you.

David Hembrow from the blog A view from the cycle path (http://hembrow.blogspot.com/) has an online store of Dutch bike bits (http://www.dutchbikebits.com/). I have not ordered from him, but he does ship to the US.
