Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - Dinotte Tail light mounting

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi just got my Dinotte tail-light, I feel much safer riding with it as its significantly brighter than both my super-flash and s-sun 120 R combined. The lens on the unit also provides a much wider spread as well which is great for added visibility. I thoroughly recommend this to anybody riding at night.
I managed to get both the battery pack and the light to mount neatly under the saddle using a velcro band and the supplied O ring.

nice! the only reason not to buy it was the cable and battery pack mess. your setup solves the issue. how is the heat situation?
... well, i will order it after all. darn! i so hope i will not add the new head light to the shopping cart that was just added to the dinotte web site.
your solution looks sweet. you shouldn't have :-).

Was just trying to help everyone out, as the seat post mounting of the light was not practical due to the leg hitting it, like yourself I didn't like all the extra cable floating around.
I think there won't be any problems with the heat, you can use a thinner velcro strip to expose more of the light head body, I think the only potential issue with the light is the weather proofness of the battery housing but you could solve this by putting a balloon around the battery pack and connector and use its case.
The velcro strip I am using has a D-link sewn into it. The velcro first goes through the battery pack loop then the O ring, the end of the strap with the D-link then wraps around the saddle rails and pulls the pack and light up into the seat, the other end of the strap then gets passed through the D-link and everything is cinched up tight, it then wraps around the underneath the light to the other side where it sticks to itself. This method keeps everything secure, the light is held twice by the strap through the O ring and the strap wrapping underneath it.
This shows the strap through the battery pack loop and the O ring.

This shows it all wrapped up, D-link on left, strap across the top goes over the saddles rails.

Hmm.. this setup will interfere with a seat bag. :(

BTW how sensitive is the on/off button? Can you jsut tap it and it'll go on/off or do you have to press it hard? For tapping pressure think .. .. a pocket calculator.

I just put everything in small zip lock bags to keep organised and use the jersey pockets.

It requires more pressure to turn on and change modes than a pocket calculator.

Another series of solutions was in this thread

I have a topeak seatbag that has these elastic straps on the bottom. So i slip the light in the first strap, which holds it firmly. Then I loop the cord around the second strap, for safety in case the light were to bounce loose. Then finally I just tuck the AA pack into the seat bag itself. Works great.

Nice simple solution.
Wouldn't it be nice if Dinotte came up with some ideas?

take a Tandem Stoker stem, mount it to your seatpost, add a short piece of cutoff handlebar and mount your Dinotte taillight. The battery pak(s) mount onto the stem (holds two nicely) and the taillights mount on each side of the handlebar piece. Very clean looking.
If you use a 6" long piece of handlebar, you can mount TWO Dinotte tail lights.

FYI: a PELICAN 1010 Microcase holds the Dinotte tali light and battery pack perfectly when the light is off the bike (ie during the day , in your bag etc. Keeps it from damage in a loaded pack.
:):)
That method almost makes me want to dump my seat wedge. It is such a cool mounting method.

The only downside with this mounting format is the tha dinotte angle gets the drivers fair square in the eyes, but I guess this the intention in the first place. There is no way to get is angled down below horizontal without making it too loose. So you might get some road rage when your out.

Here is my set up.
1. Cateye SP-6 mount to wrap around the body of the dinotte tail light. (Hint they came with your Cateye tld-1000) It makes for a very tight fit around the Dinotte.
2. Look for some older reflector mounts. I found a few at the LBS and at home, You need to look for the ones with an extend reach just a few millimeters from the seat post. The extra reach will allow you access to the switch and full tilt up or down vertical mobility.
So far this mount seems to be rock solid. Just take your time over the Railroad tracks.

I attached a pump mount that fits the Dinotte perfectly. It allows youto snap on and off the light to take with you when parked. I have pictures, but they are larger than the 100k limit.

You can upload the photos to imageshack.us then post the links here. The pictures will show up in a large format.

Four months ago I removed the Cateye 1000 I was using along with two other LED tailights. I mounted a Dinotte tail light using a conduit pipe hanger. I positioned the light so it would not only be angled up slightly but also to my left so that it is pointed directly in the eyes of motorists passing me from behind. There has been a dramatic shift in how I am passed now. The cars pull way over sometimes fully into the oncoming lane. Its like they don't want any part of me and my bike. Far from getting road rage, drivers are actually giving me a giant safety zone when they pass me. My advice is to point the light right at the drivers.
I should also mention that I upgraded from a 24w halogen headlight to a Lupine Wilma, I now get the "dim your headlights" signal from on comming cars, which I am more than happy to do as they pass me.

this is what i was talking about for mounting the Dinotte tail light to the seatpost. A shim may be required.

Nice!! I need one of those slick looking items to mount my Superflashes horizontinal for wider spread and ambulance light style :D How much do those cost? How well do they hold up? What material is it made out of?
Thanks.

I have a topeak Aero wedge. One of the type that has a click mounting attachment to the seat. I will take a picture of it tomorrow.

Derath,
Thanks mate. Can I see how that looks when it's mounted on the seat and on your bike?
Sorry for the X-post but I'm looking for a seat bag and also have future plans for a Dinotte tailight. Can anyone here help out? http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=331180

My advice is to point the light right at the drivers.
Yup that's what I do with my PB Superflash till I have the coin for the Dinotte. If I strike it rich I'm getting a couple rear Dinottes and aiming it back and mid-head level (meaning SUV/Car level) so it hits both of them square in the face to back off...

Worst idea ever. Why would you want to intentionally blind drivers? It's not your private road; if you expect cars to share the road with you you need to share the road with them also.
You'll get yourself run over pulling a stupid stunt like that.

Yeah, it does sound like a terrible idea.....except it works. I point my Dinotte right at the drivers face and guess what, they avoid me like the plague, they go around me with as much space as they can put between us.
The "sharing the road" thing only works if the drivers are into sharing too. Around here they aren't so you have to insist on a safe barrier. This is one way to do that.

Sounds totally obnoxious. No one wants to hit a cyclist. The point of a light is for a cyclist to be seen by drivers; a light shouldn't be used as a weapon.
Before you someone say "but a driver forced me off the road!", what do you think a cretin like that would do if you are blinding them with your taillight?

Your guessing at what they would do, I'm telling you what they actually do...They pass me leaving lots of space between us.

Not intentionally. When people see a lighted cycle or another car they generally dim their lights. Most people know it's not okay to blind others on the road.
Do you drive? If so, would you intentionally blind another driver with your headlights? Why?

My point is, if someone is going to be a jerk, they are going to be a jerk regardless of which light you have. Do you also drive a car or do you think that cars are your opponent?
One question; what do drivers do in a traffic jam, or when there is no room to go around you do to heavy oncoming traffic, sit and be blinded with your light in their face?
I've never heard of a light sold for a bicycle that is brighter than two automobile headlights. Maybe you should be worried about two cars passing in opposing directions. If I follow your logic, they will probably freak out and smash into each other.
On every ride I take some driver will gamble with my safety rather than slow just a bit to be able to pass me safely. Do I think that cars are my opponent? No, not the cars, but some of the owners are.

Cars headlights are not pointed directly in the face of other drivers. They are angled at the ground. You don't drive, do you?
Here's the quote that started this:

Sounds like he wants to blind people. Nice. Share the road works both ways. Somehow I'm able to commute year round in both heavy urban traffic and lighter traffic at highway speeds in a major urban area with horrible infrastructure without the need to blind car drivers. Why do you feel the need to? If you don't feel secure cycling without the need to shine a very bright light in the eyes of all who come near you, maybe cycling is just to much for your nervous system. There is safety and there is paranoia......
Safety is very important, and I won't ride without several lights, front and rear, and reflective gear, but there is no need to be a jerk and intentionally blind people by pointing a very bright light in there eyes. Like it or not, cars have a right to be on the road too.
You get what you give, and it seems to me you want to give confrontation to every car which drives behind you. Good luck with that.......

Do I drive? hahaha. Yes i drive. A 5 ton double axle rolloff bin truck, a 5 ton flatdeck, a small truck, and any other vehicle i happen to drive. I average about 100,000km a year, both work and pleasure, have a maximum RoadStar drivers discount on the insurance and on occasion teach wet weather and evasive driving on a closed tarmac.
Yes i dip the lights on the vehicles. However when it comes to cycling no bloody way. The way its set up now drivers move one lane over to pass then merge back in about 5o feet after they pass. Works for me.

Do you cycle in a city or only on country roads? In the city there isn't room to move over one lane.

Let me ask you a question. Do drivers buzz you? Do they go by you within three inches of hitting you at 40MPH? I'm not talking about the occasional jerk I'm talking about the majority of drivers who pass you in the dark. Do they buzz you?
