Foo - Building a bed, how is this design?

A couple of years ago, I made a simple bed for myself with 2x6's and 4x4 legs using large bolts, but it did not last. It started tilting in one direction until the wood gave way to the bolts and finally broke down. Also, it was very tall. Now, I want to try it again, this time without legs.

I do not need it to be too high. The basic frame design I just made up in Gimp, will raise the bed 8 inches above floor, and a box spring will provide another 8 inches of elevation. I think that will be enough for me. If I made legs, I am afraid it would end up like my last bed, so I want to exclude that design flaw entirely.

Here is a picture. Please shoot me any comments and suggestions you may have. I would like opinions on how sturdy this design will be. Thanks everyone.

Well, it depends on what you are going to use it for... >.<

buy a bed frame, FTW. a set of bed rails will run you next to nothing. the cost of all that wood is gonna be much more.

there is a link with pics and pricing. Most mattress stores throw in a set like this with a mattress and box spring purchase. or they did last month when I bought a mattress for my son.

By the way, those walmart metal frames did not appeal to me. I think I should be able to finish this project a little under $50. Last time, I sanded and polished the frame, I think this time, I will just sand it.

Jerseybest: I love that design and considering it. The only problem is carving the wood to fit the legs in there. I am not sure what tools I need to carve the wood. Any ideas?

From my limited woodworking experience and lots of New Yankee Workshop viewing, I think the proper way would be to use a dado blade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dado_set) set for a table saw, but you could use a dado blade substitute (http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/workshop/dado.html).

The graphic was made in Google Sketchup.
