Foo - Another cancer damn it!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Well not a full blown case of THE BIG C, but I've got this thing growing on the side of my nose (see pic) so I went to the doctors today to have it looked at. It's nothing major about a cm in diameter slightly discolored and rough.
She say it's a 'pre-cancerous' growth, with this name about a mile long which I promptly forgot.
I have this cream to put on two nights a week. If it doesn't start improving in a couple weeks, it's time to see the dermatologist. This is just crap! I really wish who/what ever is pulling the celestial strings would just take my ass. I've been ****ed with too much in this lifetime to have to deal with any more ****.
F**k me mom, I can't dance!

Ugh.
I hate cancer.
I hope it's something that won't kill you.
Sorry to hear the news Stacey. Will be praying for you.
In the event they have to cut it off, just remember, Chicks Dig Scars!

If its Actinic Keratosis, that usually responds pretty well to treatment.
It means you'll be staying out of the sun though. Might want to invest in a trainer.

Hope it's nothing serious, Stacey. The important phrase here is "pre". It might be nothing more than that. Let's hope so.

Nah, didn't sound like that.
What do you mean staying out of the sun? Just while this is being treated or the rest of my life?

Good that you went so early. My brother pointed out something to me on his temple that was similar about two months ago, and he's still not seen a doctor. :o
I hope it's completely benign. ((hugs))

Eh, maybe it will eat its way into his brain and take him out quickly... The lucky bastige. :)

The treatment for AK can make you extremely sensitive to light. Basically, its a chemical that hinders cell mitosis and thus growth. Since cancer/pre-cancer cells have a more rapid growth pattern than regular cells, this effects them more so than it does regular cells. It makes one very sensitive to sun light though during treatment and for a few weeks after.
Anyway, I didn't say it in the other post, but I'm glad you caught it early.

Having had Basal Cell Carcinoma myself, (A couple of times), I would go to the dermatologist and have it cut out first thing. I don't stay out of the sun, but I am seldom without sunscreen.
(FWIW, mine did not look like that)

I've known a couple people with this and it does respond well to the topical treatment. A few of them were pretty sensitive to the sun the day they put the stuff on and the day after. Other than that, about four months of creaming it, it was gone in the three cases I personally knew of.
I bet I can get a cheap lighter Stacey :)
???
I'll make you a good deal on my Zippo. :)

Stacey- my sister had some kind of skin cancer type stuff on her face. She had to put a cream on it daily and her face started to have purple blotches. She didn't want to tell us about this. How we found out was we went to visit her and saw the discoloring. It was on it's way to fading but she had explained that the cream "brings" out where the pre cancer is and takes care of it somehow. Her whole treatment lasted about 4 weeks.
I am hoping that all goes well with you, sister. ((hugs))
And as for you asking to be taken, well.......It probably ain't your time yet, na'mean? ;)

As someone who has to regularly have polyps and moles cut off and biopsied,
I would get to a dermatologist as quickly as possible.
Your GP may be a talented, well intentioned person, but he/she may not have the skills to deal with it, and common sense tells me that the earlier treatment starts, the more likely you are to have a good outcome.
Good luck.
Doh! Sending good thoughts and seconding the burning the **** out of it idea :D

I've been searching the interwebs on this and I guess that AK is what it is as there doesn't seem to be anything else. . The medicine she gave me is Aldara 5% (Imiquimod) <Shrug>
Dang Stacey that stinks, but it should be easily taken care of right?
I have a fairly large cist on my neck, no insurance to see what it is. Hopefully it's nothing.

I like the word pre. It's a good word when it comes to this sort of thing. Early is good. I bet you'll be fine.
Was the word they used something like Dysplastic? If so, I had 7 of them shaved off and biopsied back in April. Guess what I get to do now? Have the last 3 of them recut for full excision. I hope you don't have to go down that road though. Hope the current treatment is successful.

For what it's worth, there are 3 people at my work place that recently had to undergo the same topical treatment. The cream turned the area sore and red looking for a few weeks as it "burned" the skin locally, however it did the trick in all 3 cases. I wouldn't sweat too much over this ... like you've said, you've gone through a lot already, this is just a minor blip. Glad you caught it in the pre-cancerous stage.

I have never had cancer, however, my family members have and I wish you a cancer free body. The disease also took the life of my Taekwondo instructor's father. Now my instructor holds a golf and Taekwondo martial arts benefit tournament every year to raise money for a cure. If anyone will be in the northern Virginia area this August/September and would like to attend or donate, please PM me for directions and details.
