Bicycle Mechanics - removing freewheel w/o freewheel remover?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

ive got a wheel that I want to cut apart and use the hub for a project, the wheel has a junk shimano 5spd freewheel on it. none of my freewheel removers will fit it. is there any way I can disassemble the freewheel and get it off without the proper remover? Its no biggie, I can stop by the LBS tomorrow if I have to, I just would like to get it off tonight if I can.
Sheldon Brown has the procedure here:
Let me make Sheldon's proceedure and your experience a short course:
"FREEWHEEL REMOVAL WITHOUT A TOOL 101":
Freewheel removal without the proper tool is a complete mess and a total pain-in-the-ass. Don't do it. Either buy the tool, or bring the wheel to a bike shop and have them remove it (free or maybe a couple of bucks).
And there you have it; the best advice you will probably get all day.

+1. The tool is cheaper than 2 hours of your labor.
