Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - Best way to recover ?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've been cycling for about 9 months and am 42 Yrs.. I just did my first MS 150 ride with a 19 MPH avg. for both day's(75 miles both day's). My legs feel fine but both knees are just a little tender. I'm planning on lifting my seat a few cm. to help that problem.
My question is how should I recover from this two day ride? I'm taking today off. Should I take two day's off ? Three ? Should I start back up with my reg. rides or start with a recovery ride?
I'm planning on riding a 70 mile ride this Sat..
At your age it's probably wise to take at least one or two days off and then get back at it so you don't loose any fitness before your next ride.
But it depends on your fitness level and how hard you rode those two days. If you feel that your legs feel good just take one day off. But keep a check on your knees. For a new rider the muscles get in shape for riding much faster than the joints do so when you do a longer, harder ride your joints are not up to it yet. Often the way to deal with tender knees is to keep riding but at a lower speed and power output. My feeling is that your knees are tender because you may not be used to riding at that speed and your knees are not used to that kind of sustained power output. Try riding further at much slower speeds for a couple of days since the MS150 was a good workout you can back off for a few days to let your knees recover a bit.
