Just kidding. :p

Hmmm I was thinking to myself if I wanted to make this thread or not for the last half an hour. It's just, lately like the past week it just feels like everything isn't going the way I thought it would, or the way I wanted it, and quite a few things are bothering me, and thinking about them, has left me exhausted. I just completely feel mentally exhausted right now. I think this is all coming out because I've gotten 5 hours or less of sleep every night for the last few days, on top of working all day. 4 or 5 days ago I even completely lost my excitement for my road trip in a week, which is completely not like me. I know there are a few bfers on here, Scott, VV, and Snowy, etc who hit a bottom and it's been great to see them all rise from the ashes and show how truly strong they are. What did you do to stand up again(not that I'm even nearly in the same position as they were)? and no, I'm not depressed, I don't need no drugs. :) Just feeling a little, meh lately. I think I need a virtual ***** slap. Where's KT when I need him.

Well i hear ya and i am guilty as hell of what you are feeling. I dont want to bike ride anymore, yet i used to bike ride every day just about. I have a 8 day vacation in a luxury cabin in Virginia and i dont feel excited at all. I have been dealing with a lot as well, i hope you can change that funk you are in man.

Pheard,

Get a passport if you don't have one and visit almost anyplace in the world other than the USA - I can suggest more than a few - and see how the rest of the world lives. Most likely you will return thanking God (or whatever you believe in) that you live where you do and have the opportunities you do.

Compared to almost everyone on the planet - you won the lottery. :)

I would try a microwave burrito, a slurpee and a couple of slim jims. If that does not bring you out of this, you are probably a goner.

Yea I woke up like that today too. I really can't pinpoint exactly what it is that is making me feel all funky. I knew something was up when the usual thing I day dream about(my road bike project) wasn't even of interest to me. I'm sorry you feel that way too Karen, we're just having one of those days.

If you are not suffereing from true depression, it'll pass. Everybody feels meh sometimes. If you've been under more stress than usual, in addition to working harder physically than usual, that could very well account for it. Odds are you are not depressed (in the clinical sense), and you'll feel more like your (un)usual goofy self soon enough. :p

If the feeling doesn't go away and just stays and stays and stays - and we're talking weeks here, not hours or days - maybe you do have a case of depression of some sort. Of course, only a trained professional can make that diagnosis and only an MD can prescribe drugs for it. But before you are sent down that route, a responsible doc will give you a pretty thorough work-up to make sure it isn't something physical (an out-of-whack thyroid, for just one example, can really drag a person's energy and enthusiasm levels down). I would be very suspicious of anyone who just hands you a prescription for Prozac right out of the gate without doing some significant checking.

In any event, do a little on-line research on the symptoms for depression. I don't have a DSM-IV (the book psychiatrists and psychologists use to diagnose mental illnesses) in front of me, but I seem to recall that the definitions for the various types of depression all involve a list of symptoms, and if you have more than a certain number of them most or all of the time for a set period of time, then you may qualify.

Now go ride your bike. Doesn't matter which one. :D

I'm not asking for attention or for people to feel sorry for me.

Just practical advice to get out of the funk I'm in.First, take care of yourself physically. Get lots of sleep and eat balanced meals.

Then start doing the simple things you enjoy, gardening, walking with your dog, hitting Happy Hours with buddies, etc. Each thing you accomplish successfully will make you feel better and better. Then work up to bigger projects.

Jon, what saved me was riding my roadbike. And Foo. I could not ride 24/7 when I felt at my worst, and there were days I did not care if I lived or died. But I had Foo, and I forced myself to participate and be engaged, and such interaction has never failed to help turn a bad day around.

But even so, there have been days where I found it hard just breathing in and out. And nothing seemed to have any meaning for me. In those moments, seeing myself sinking, I would recall the advice of my late husband to me, knowing that he would eventually die and I might have a very hard time afterward. He told me to find ways to contribute to others.

Find something you can do for someone else. Go volunteer at a soup kitchen. Go to the library and help teach an adult to read. Volunteer to be a Big Brother. Help an elderly neighbor with yardwork. Just go give of yourself. By doing so, you bring yourself back up out of you, and engage in things and life around you again. And this can make all the difference. There's a very positive euphoria one has just knowing one has made a difference to another. :)

For now, though, I urge you to just go out and take a short ride on your roadbike. With helmet. If you're like me, the ride sucks donkey balls in the first 3-4 miles, then a euphoria takes over. At the end of 20 miles, I feel like I'm on top of the world! :) And this lasts for hours.... Just go for short rides of even 10 miles, Jon. I promise you, this will help.

For me, when I'm on the road, there's no past, no future, just the very present, and the pavement passin' under my wheels. The road is a great place to clear one's head, and ease the pain in one's heart. Trust me. :)

Definitely check your diet - when I get into a funk sometimes I realize I was eating a lot more crap. It can be circular too - you feel bad, eat crap, feel worse, eat more crap, etc...

+1 to what everyone else has said too - everyone gets into funks. I try to snap it by finding an adventure, either by myself or with someone. Go to someplace you haven't been before (doesn't have to be very far away or it could be a last minute cheap plane ticket to someplace and an overnight bag). Splurg on a good meal, a good pipe and a good bottle of wine or scotch on a mountain top someplace.

Sounds pretty neat Danno - good luck with that. There isn't much that is better than heading off in a totally new direction.

Phread, it could be food related, but often it is an inner voice telling you "something is wrong with my life". At times, you feel down because you aren't living by your own code - knowing a little of your religious background, I am mentioning this. You may not agree with they way you were raised, but that doesn't mean that it isn't deep in your brain washed mind. It helps to really start pulling out the garbage (and pearls of wisdom) and seeing what makes you wince. Don't avoid the stuff - deal with it directly.

By the way, this process never ends. It is part of the process of personal growth.

To give an example, some people can easily be hedonist but I just can't. Even my hobbies have to be productive. There was a time in my life I tried to go against that - sure made me feel bad. I feel best when I am accomplishing things - and then when I relax I can relax knowing that it is necessary. I am not saying everyone should be like me, in fact, I think I am overboard - but it works for me.

Often when we are down, we are going against our core beliefs. These core beliefs may be wrong - but that doesn't mean we can just walk away from them. They have to be dealt with.

By the way, the advice of ride your bike is a good one - studies have shown that exercise produces as good as results as taking pills. Another thing that helps they say is fish oil. It really does work from what I have observed. (I don't take them, I don't tend to have much of a problem)

Exercise releases endorphins, and endorphins make you happy.

When I get down for a while I like to go out and do something I don't normally do. Just break up the monotony of your life. Go see a friend you haven't in forever, visit a cousin or something a few hundred miles away, go camping, or fishing, or hunting, or whatever does it for you. I get caught up in my everyday, mundane life and forget to throw in some variety. Perhaps a little change would do you good.

Pheard,
What did I do?? First, I surrounded myself with people whom loved me and supported me. I spent endless hours on the phone with Air :). I also GOT ON MY BIKE. I lost 15lbs since May. I just took all my anger out on my bikes and rode my little butt off LITERALLY :)
For me it was having people DAILY give me the support and advice that I needed to hear. I was down on myself. I really felt like my world ended when ex and I broke up, but then I realized (after doing a mountain bike race) that I didn't need him to be HAPPY. That I was an GREAT person and that I had already accomplished alot by myself.

My advice is this......... WE ALL HAVE SOMETHING GREAT TO OFFER THE WORLD. What is that for you??

Just hearing one of my friends say to me that I'm a breath of fresh air, REALLY changed my view of myself. :)

Pheard I'm here if you NEED ANYTHING. I know your going on a trip soon and take TOTAL ADVANTAGE of it :) DIG DEEP. :)
