Hello! I have a road bike with 27" rims and I'm looking to replace my tires with some wider, cushier ones. What are the widest slick (or semi-slick) tires I can get for 27" rims? The bike has cantis and plenty of room in the frame for big tires, so clearance should not be a problem.
Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Josh

The widest tires you can put on a wheel is dependent on the width of the rim.

I've been using Schwalbe 27x1.25 puncture resistant on my Fuji S12-S and like them. Had my first flat on them last week when I hit a small chard of glass just right and I was flat in seconds. They are fairly wide and cushy.

I've also run Serfas before and they were fine. They offer less rolling resistance and handled more like a 700x25 size tire, but I like the Schwalbe tires more for my current commute. http://www.rei.com/product/724621

Nashbar has both continental ultra sports and gatorskins both in the 27 by 1&1/4 (32mm) size -both are good tires, also panaracers as well- many people like these too.

I've used quite a few 27" tires that are currently on the market, in my opinion the Continental Ultra Gatorskins are the best 27" tire out there. They're available in 27 x 1 1/4; they're fast, puncture resistant, durable, and give an excellent ride quality. Unfortunately, they're also expensive, about $35 each-

Concur. I aquired a pair of these in a deal with another BF member and can't believe how nice they are.

When I started my search, the first thing I looked for was if Schwalbe's Big Apples came in a 27" size. Unfortunately it looks as if they do not. Is there any 27" tire you guys know of that comes close to this size?

The widest 27" tires I've ever heard of were 27 x 1 3/8." They're probably still available somewhere, but the widest ones you'll commonly find are 27 x 1 1/4." When 27"'s were popular, the sizes seen on road bikes were 1 1/4, 1 1/8, 1, and 7/8 (this roughly equates to 32mm, 28mm, 25mm, and 23mm, the common 700c sizes used today, but with 27's there was a bias towards the wider sizes, whereas with 700c it seems to be the other way around). It sounds like what you're looking for is the equivalent of a "29er" tire (approx. 2" wide tire) for your ISO 630 rims. It's happened with ISO 622 of course, but as far as I know there's nothing close to that in ISO 630-

Nashbar's Prima 2 plus tires are 27x1 1/4 and are nearly slick tread. The only 27x1 3/8 tires I have seen are knobby tread.
