I purchased a Devinci Amsterdam (hybrid) about 3 months ago, it is a hybrid type bike. I have taken it for one 2 day tour and a 4 day tour (on the Icefields Parkway which is awesome if anyone is thinking of doing it!). So far so good, however, I am planning a year long cycling tour through S.E. Asia, South India, and Europe beginning next fall and am wondering if this bike will do just fine...or if I should get a "full fledged" touring bike.

The Devinci is an aluminum frame, with a Carbon fork, with LX Shimano parts. I am thinking that if I do keep this bike, I'd likely replace the wheels, tires, get a steel fork, and get some lower gearing. I have also already replaced the seat, pedals, and added a rear blackburn rack.

So...what I'm asking your advise for....should I spend the money to upgrade this bike to (hopefully) make it through at 1 year tour, or go buy a touring bike with a steel frame, strong wheels, etc. (I'm thinking a bike like Trek 520, Rocky Mountain Sherpa, Surly LHT, something along those lines).

Your thoughts and advise are appreciated!!

if i were you, i would be looking at a new bike ... given the amount of stuff you have to upgrade or replace on your current one, plus a purpose built one is a bit comfier and stronger in teh long run for your year long tour ...

just my $0.02 worth

Agreed, sorry to say. You might do some research on tire & tube availablity in your destinations, too. I have *heard* but do not *know* that 26" mtb tires are easier to acquire in less developed areas. If I was to do it again, i would look into Thorn bikes with 26" wheels & drop bars. I have a 520 that is absolutely great for 1st world road touring, but at MTB style bike might do better for dirt tours and more expeditiony things.
