Bicycle Mechanics - High Limit Screw question

I have my high limit screw backed out all the way to the point that it does not even contact the limiting plate yet the derailer does not travel any further to the outside. Thus the outside of the chain still occasionnally snags on the outside of the tooth on the 11t cog. Any ideas on how to correct this?

I have an idea of what it might be but don't want to say it for fear it might come true and so I don't get biased responses.

And now i'm wondering how you are drawing that conclusion. If you have the screw backed out al the way and the derailleur is not contacting the limiting plate then your cable is the thing preventing it from moving.

The next thing to do is test another rear derailleur and look for obvious hanger damage.

The front derailleur cable pulls to shift to the big ring so it must be in tension, try increasing the tension with the barrel adjustor.

It's also important to have all of the cable out of the shifter when attaching the cable to the derailleur.

We're talking rear derailleur...

Egad! Why are you adjusting the limit stop with the cable attached? The high limit screw sets the reference for the whole system and needs to be set without cable tension. So start the adjustment process from the beginning. Shift into high gear, remove cable tension, set the high stop (align pulley with 1st cog), attach cable, take out the slack, shift a few times to make sure the slack is out of the cable but only adjust in the small cog, shift into low gear, set low stop, fine tune.

Other things to check:

1. Derailleur hanger alignment
2. Cables and housing dirty, frayed, etc
3. Dirt/debris jammed in your derailleur

Thank you kickit, I'm struggling with getting my rear derailleur adjusted my self and this was also the problem... I think!
