Folding Bikes - Vitesse VS Speed Pro

I recently bought a very used 16" Dahon. The name on it is Getaway V. It appears to be so old that the entire system of latches is different than current Dahons. For all I know it just has the Dahon logo and isn't a true Dahon bike. I bought the bike to take along on our summer trips, so I can get my cycling fix. It's been an OK bike but I'd like to invest in a better folder. This one is pretty rickety and I don't think it's worth putting money into it. As I said, it's old.

At one time I was thinking of getting a 26" folder but I already have a full-size bike. I'm looking at 2 different Dahons. I've had my eye on the Vitesse D7 based on reviews and price. But then I read about the Dahon Speed Pro. I'd like something that's good for some good, long exercise (15-25 miles) when we have down time on trips. Are the extra gears (and extra $$$) of the Speed Pro worth it or will the Vitesse be enough bike? This is all pretty new to me so I appreciate any feedback. Unfortunately none of the local dealers carry Dahon so I can't try before I buy.

I commute 15 miles roundtrip on my bike each day. . . . . . I bought a Vitesse D5 in March that has a internal hub. . . . . 2 weeks ago, I bought a Speed Pro TT for long distance rides. . . . I think both bikes are good. . . .however, if I plan on long rides, I much prefer my speed pro for the tires and ease of gearing. . . . re: price difference and value, well if you already have a full size with a full range of gears, perhaps the vitesse would be more than enough. . . . however, if for 25 mile rides, I think might be a stretch on the vitesse. . .

The Vitesse D7 has a few pluses and minuses. The 7-speed derailleur is propreitary, so it can't be upgraded and may be difficult to repair. The frame is aluminum and will ride harsh. I'd probably go for the Speed D7; I really don't see what the Vitesse improves over the Speed. Perhaps someone else can clue you in on what the extra cost gets you.

The Speed Pro makes no sense to me. A road bike with an internal hub, suspension, a proprietary stem and minimal handlebar adjustment? Not to mention that it's just not a good plan to pull back on that stem! It just don't add up.

(I would crack on the steel frame and 24 lb weight, but Steel is Real and weight is irrelevant for non-racers. :D )

I will say the color and design on the Speed Pro is nice, and it will fold better than most other high-performance folders. But really, unless there are truly killer hills in your area it won't ride much faster than the Vitesse or Speed D7.

After an insomnia-driven evening of web search/research on the various folding options I decided to try a Swift. Placed my order and will we what we shall see. Looking forward to it!
