Bicycle Mechanics - Tire rubbing against frame

I am having trouble with my tire thats has quick release. Everytime I go off a 1 foot drop, the tire moves out of place and starts rubbing against the frame even when i tighten it to the mac. Any suggestions?

Maybe get a new QR? I think the locking ring on your skewer may be worn out. :confused:

I had a similar problem on my 99 Rockhopper comp. The QR had a small metal 'nut' covered by plastic to make it look normal size. The metal part would slip into the recess for the deraileur hanger and the wheel would sit crooked. I just replaced the 'nut' with a full size metal one, as it has more surface area on the dropout and can't fit in the recess.

Where could i find a bigger nut and how much would it cost?

25 cents at any hardware store, just bring in the nut and they can match it.

Chances are, you are not tightening the QR sufficiently.

Although not one of the above mentioned, I suggest that you examine the outside surface of the dropout and the mating surface on the QR to see if either is worn smooth. You can scuff the dropout a bit with a fine metal file or replace the QR or both depending on which appears to be deficient.

you can see on the pic the nut on the left is the original Specialized one and the one on the right is the replacement one. The original has the black plastic around the outside, so the metal part (now a bit rusty) has a very small clamping area. This would slide into the recess where the tag lines the dropout, as it is only marginally bigger than the recess.

I had a look at my Deore front QR and it has the same design as the Specialized, although it doesn't cause problems on the front. The nut I used was off a cheap skewer that I had lying around.

On Specialized with replaceable hangers if the wheel slips out even once it will often "wipe" the hanger where the axle nut contacts it and from then on the wheel will tend to pop out til you replace the hanger(Get a cheap, beefy QR at the same time.)
