I'm trying to figure this out-
Am I puting myself at a disadvantage in terms of race-preparedness if I train with aerobars of some sort, since I wouldn't be using them in an actual race?
Or would they give me an advantage in training that would carry over?
Or are they just an unnecessary fashion accessory?
I usually suggest that people train with them minimally. Only enough to learn how to use them and get comfortable with your position - no more. No one can tell you how long that will take. It totally depends on how fast you get comfortable and adopt to turning with them.

It all depends on your racing if your just doing mainly TTs definitly train in the aerobars but other races like road and crits you should just train in the hoods or drops as they use different muscles than the aerobar position.

If you're going to be doing TT's, you need to train a fair amount on the aerobars. They only really give you an advantage if you can comfortably hold that position for the length of the TT and produce power in that position.
So if you're going to be doing TT's as well as RR's and crits, I'd try to ride the TT bike at least once a week, more as your coming up to an important TT.
