Serotta, that looks interesting, though early. ;) I could probably do the 35-miler. I plan to go to the Invitational Crit in CLT later that evening to catch the women's and men's crits. Do you know if there'd be a group from this ride interested in meeting up later? I'm trying to organize a BF group, but would gladly go or meet up with any group that's interested.
VV,
I have heard talk of going to the crit that evening, but can't remember who I heard talking about it. We have marked the course, and will be "proofing" it early (5AM) that morning in the truck. I usually ride the 35 (actually 32) with the other guys that help mark the course, but we do it at a sedate pace after everyone else is gone.
Unless things change, I will be unable to see the crit. We have a scheduled visit to Granny's house that evening.
You should bring Granny to the crit! :D :p
Are you going to come out to LMS on August 2 to see if any of the pros come out to ride TT? Kristin Armstrong and her T-Mobile team (at the time) came out in 2005, at which time she set the women's TR. TEAm Lipton is supposed to be at the crit, so maybe she'll come out again this year. I'd love to meet some of those gals.
Granny is 85, we are lucky to get her out the door and in another. The race would be a monumental task.
I doubt I will show my face at the TT. It would be demoralizing to be around so many people male and female that could kick my butt riding bikes. On my best day, 20 years ago, I struggled to break 24 minutes in the 10 mile time trial on 521. A fast ride these days is drafting several riders for 30 or 40 miles and averaging 18 MPH.
You don't give yourself enough credit, Serotta. An average of 18.5mph is my fastest ever solo ride, and that was only over 22 miles, and I'm lately in the 17's.... To break 24 minutes at a TT on the road is quite an accomplishment!
Sorry to hear that you'd feel so demoralized at the TT. I have apparently mistaken you for a self-confident man who loves cycling, in any form.... :o :(
My gm is 95. Now that is too old to drag to a TT, though I don't doubt that she would enjoy seeing all those healthy young men in Lycra. But that's my grandma. ;) :p
Actually, demoralizing wasn't the correct word. Degenerate was more the correct usage. Women in lycra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my favorite sports, the only thing that tops it is the nude beaches in Mexico.
*******Oh, oh, here comes Wifey to look over my shoulder, must stop panting, and tab to screen of CNN news stories.*******
:roflmao:
All righty, then. :p
Hey, you children get back on topic right now! :p
I'm signed up for the 60. Seems silly to drive in a car to ride my bike... I wonder if I should try to ride to Cane Creek Park ...?
(The voice in my head says "Cranky, you're an old man. Drive the car."):(
Depending on the route you take to CCP, you could get a century in. :p
I was thinking of riding down with a light, but I have to be there at 5 to check the course, and I'll need the truck.
Go for it COR!!!!! You can always find my white Ford pickup and bum a ride home.
Serotta,
Is the route description available? Someone on the Bolt Brother's Forum wants to know.

The link might be dicey, due to forum passwords, etc.

The course is marked GFB with arrows and 30 or 60 route to follow starting just downhill from the day use entrance, where the parking field is for major events. We rode the 30 last night, marks are easy to see.
Here is a link to the Gmap route for GFB 30 (actually 32). Start out going East Northeast on Harkey Rd. up past the entrance to Cane Creek. (start is at the end marker #32 on map.)

Below is the attached TXT file for the 60:
Great, Thanks. I was looking for this over on the bolt brothers forum.
Last year I rode to the GFB ride, got there just as everyone was starting the ride. I just turned around and rode on, registered at the lunch after the ride. I ended up with 90 miles by the time I got home.
I put the 60 mile route on routeslip. If the link doesn't work, Look in SC under Lancaster or Pageland

I just talked to Will, and posted it over there too~!

90 is about what I'd end up with as well, and I'd have to leave home at 6:30. The route passes within 1/2 mile of my house. Maybe I could sleep until 8 and just blend into the ride?
I think I'll drive to CCP. I'll be riding my "Bottecchia" ;) if any of you guys see me, be sure to introduce yourselves. :D

Yeah, this really is a great route. I've been riding in that area lately with some of Serotta's cohorts. It's an interesting area to ride - very rural, light traffic, just enough hills to keep it interesting.
I'll be riding tomorrow, along with my two kids.

On one of the tandems?
Nah. I actually sold the tandems a while back. They really were not getting ridden much. Plus, it's hard enough keeping 11 half-bikes, I mean singles, in at least semi-road/trail worthy condition. Remember my dissintegrating tire? :o I knew a family who could use them more than we could. We are all on various singles now.
Although I'd love to be able to get the kids on the old Santana and just sit in behind! :D
(edit) Sorry, double posting idiot at the keyboard......

Funny, I thought about checking your rear tire for tape before the ride started, but I was called away to Tradesville duty. You all looked comfy as you rode by......
Great ride, great weather! 255 bike riders was the tally I heard. I didn't get the count on the runners and horse riders. It was a pretty big event. Lots of items raffled off for the Red Cross.
Mark your calendars next year!
Wonderful support: State patrolmen...folks in white pickup trucks watching us go by on Taxahaw Rd?... so many rest stops that I would have gained weight if I'd stopped for each one... the Bolt Brothers Mystery Wagon with brooms on the front bumper, sweeping? Thanks for working this one Serotta.
It's almost time for the GFB ride again:

Sounds like an interesting ride. I've added it to my list of possibilities.
The ride is on very lightly traveled roads. A few rough spots, a few dogs, just enough of each to keep you awake. The 60 has a couple of very long gradual climbs. The 30 has two or three climbs, one is rather short and steep, but nothing anyone would dread. Just about the time you are ready for them to quit, they do!
There is new pavement on the Chesterfield County portion of Taxahaw Rd. That's good. Unfortunately they paved over the warnings before that terribly surfaced Lynches River bridge. I'm hoping the warnings will be repainted before the ride. Maybe I should carry a can of paint with me when I ride next weekend.

COR I painted the edges of the cement white at most of the big pot holes on the bridge. Thankfully most of the speed from the downhill is scrubbed off on the short flat before the bridge. We will be going out a day or two before the event to check the markings. I will try to remember to put out a warning or two near the bottom of the hill on the good pavement.
thanks for the reminder.

Thanks Serotta... You're doing a heckuva job! :thumb:

I'm just the stooge that rides the back of the truck and handles a bit of the painting. There are two other riding buddies that do the bulk of the work and assist the Red Cross in the planning and implementation.
Maybe we should do "C - O - R" on the road before the Taxahaw bridge. Of course, that would stand for Crumbly Old Roadbed. I'll most likely get out voted, so it will say "HOLES AHEAD" instead.
This is the website for early registration. Look on the right side:

serotta, do you know roy settle?
I assume you're talking about the Roy originally from Great Falls, SC.
He and his wife had dinner at our house this past weekend.
serotta,
He is the one that got me into this mess! lol! We work at Siemens, and I will ride the Go for Blood with him.
Great guy, by the way!

Barry,
In this group, Roy alternates between being a great guy and an A...... well, you know!
Roy will tell you the truth. The ride is a very good one as rides go. Very little traffic, and plenty of country scenery.
Later,

One week and a wake up!
Come enjoy the GFB rides
Saturday AM. 25 dollars to the Red Cross (Union County Chapter) at the gate!
I signed up this AM. I'll be on the red and black Scott with a either a Summit Cycles or Gamecock jersey on. Please say hi to any of you who read this.

Generic black bike with no decals here. I'll probably wear my Fredly yellow jersey, since no one is paying me for advertising space.
See ya'll in the morning! black fuji aloha/yellow jersey :)
Black Guru & RAIN Jersey, mayhem in the AM...
blue specialized jersey, hammer nutrition bibs riding an black allez
say hello if you see me, happy riding!
Thanks all for riding the GFB ride 08! I haven't seen the numbers yet, but I assume by the crowd of bikers and runners it was a great success! I was on my Santana single, and wore a Red Cross jersey. I started at the end of the group, and rode the 32 this year. About the time I finished I mumbled a short prayer for those of you that did the metric. The heat was already getting unbearable just after 10AM. I had visions of dehydrated riders climbing the long hills on Dudley and Taxahaw Road.
yeah those hills were challenging in the heat, GREAT RIDE THOUGH!
Wounded Warrior here...Rider in Yellow Jersey (:troll:) joined pace line near the front of Metric route approx. 10mi. in. Something made him lock-up IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GROUP, guy in front of me went down, I went down to avoid him, another rider went over me, several others down. Then he had the courtesy NOT TO STOP TO CHECK ON ANYONE DOWN :wtf:!!!
Put some SERIOUS hurt on me and my bike. Bars, rear deraileur (SRAM Force) rear wheel may need truing. I truly did ride for blood. Just a rant here: IF YOU"RE NOT COMFORTABLE RIDING IN A PACELINE WITH PEOPLE YOU DON'T KNOW, STAY THE H**L OUT!
I'm gonaa hurt a ton tomorrow.

Hey PAlt . Sorry you were wounded. The Rider in the Yellow Jersey would be me. I don't believe I locked down or even feathered my brakes. I did stop pedaling when the guy in front of me did. I felt the guy behind me rub my wheel slightly. I was surprised he went down. I did return to check and saw that there was ample support. Since there had been a collision I supposed that someone would want to yell at me and I'd want to hear the other sides, but no one said anything so I guessed I was absolved of blame. I've been riding for 38 years occasionally in groups and have never run or been run into before. Sorry again for the personal and equipment injuries. You can think of me what you will.
serotta,
Nice meeting you and thanks for the prayer. Roy, Ed and myself slipped off about 8:00AM and looks like we missed the chaos 10 miles down the road. Sorry about your ride and body, PAlt.
GamecockTaco, thanks for the greeting! You should have jumped the fence with us! Great ride, well supported, will do it again next year.
