In about three weeks, an old college roommate of mine who "made it big" is getting married in grand style. The rehearsal dinner is in one of the nicest places in town, and the reception is in a similarly nice place, so I get the feeling that this is going to be a pretty formal affair.

So as a guy, I can wear my best suit, no problem there, however my date (my girlfriend of 18 months) doesn't own a single dress that fits properly (lost some weight since college, but more curvy than in highschool :) ) so we need to go shopping...

Any suggestions for dresses (styles, colors, etc.) that would be appropriate for this occasion?
Thanks in advance!

look at pics of lindsay lohan and/or paris hilton clubbing and then go completely opposite of that, and you should be fine

Accessories - not too flashy. Just enough to say how much a lady she is. :)

The key is flattering but understated. The ultimate rule at any wedding, especially for the lady guests: do not under any circumstances allow yourself to look like you are trying to upstage the bride. Even if you aren't, if people think you are, it's is considered tres gauche.

So is laughing out loud when the guests are asked if there is good cause for the happy couple not to be married.

I'd like her to look like my girlfriend, not somebody I paid to "escort" me.

Keep the great ideas coming! I think we're looking for something that we can get some mileage out of...classic but not too conservative, stylish but not too flashy.

Classic black shorts, a subtle multi-colored jersey, and white ankle socks. Of course, black Adidas flip-flops instead of Sidi cleats makes walking easier.

Well on that case how about a summer dress and sandals. Or worse yet, Daisy Dukes!!

+1 on the little black dress.

+1 to all of the above. It will also be economical because if the doesn't have such a dress in her wardrobe that fits her, she ought to. However - sometimes it's considered bad ettiquette for a woman to wear black to a wedding, especially in the summer. You did say this was a fancy wedding, right? So, I would also go with something like a shrug or shawl in a color other than black. Something summery.

Daisey Dukes and a form fitting Metalica tank top. :D

I'm not drunk, just a non-conforming reactionary.

Black is okay for the fellow, but not the lady. A dress in a summer color and a shawl to cover up the shoulders if need be.

Shes the woman, she already knows how to dress and she knows how to dress you too:). Take a step back and let her work out the details.

You know - considering many people honestly don't care anymore - the OP might consider sending an email to his friend asking about it and he can forward it onto the bride for an answer. I actually did that once, as money was tight for a new dress, and I received a bemused go-ahead. The bride found it hard to believe that anyone would even bother with wedding etiquette anymore. This is of course assuming the OP's girlfriend even likes black dresses. Some women don't.

Sometimes when women are going through life changes that involve having to change our wardrobes, we can flounder a bit about things we're usually good at. Even when it's for a good reason like losing weight. :o

She already has that outfit, but we're saving it for a ride on the Sunday after the wedding!

I would recommend a little black cocktail dress with maybe some simply jewelry and black pumps/heels. If she doesn't like the idea of the "little black dress", I would recommend something soft and not too bright for then she could "out do" the bride. Something simple and elegant would be very suitable for the occasion. Hm, maybe she could find a soft colored summer dress with strappy heeled sandals.

Also, if she doesn't wear many dresses ask her to find something that she could wear again instead of only at a wedding. Maybe you can help her find more dress. Remember to have fun and be supportive of her if she's hesitant about a certain dress cut, color, etc.

EDIT: I just found out that she has an outfit already. I tried...

Put her in a baggy nascar Tshirt and daisy dukes and get her really really drunk. He will hate you forever, you will have the best story ever.

she already has a cycling outfit...still needs a wedding outfit though. I guess we'll just have to go shopping this weekend and see what we can find.

Sounds to me like there aren't too many "rules" about what's appropriate...which might be a good thing if it means we can't go wrong.
