Anyone know of a good wheel builder or shop in the SE Michigan or Toledo area?

I don't know specifically about wheel builds, but 2 wheel tango in ann arbor (their main store) is reputable, and I swear by the bike works in toledo ( agin no specifics on wheel builds). Good luck

Chako, thanks for responding. Here's what I've been finding:

Two wheel tango has a faily high quote, and strongly emphasized building with their machine-cut straight-guage spokes.

Great Lakes also seems high, but the builder seems very very knowledgable.

Continental in Hazel Park has a real good price and good experience, IMO.

Lickton's (Oak Park, IL) has the best price and sounds like good experience, but is mail order a good idea?

Still looking!

I am finding that even high-end hand-built wheels (~$800/pair)are beating factory in terms of weight per cost.

I think for around 800 you could get a custom build from joe youg wheels. If you search the road forums for custom wheels, you'll come across a couple of posts that highly praise him. From what I remember reading it might be better to try calling him as he's a little bad at returning emails.

Check out his resume here

Thanks, but I've read that one, and not all the feedback was complimentary. I don't think I'll go that way.

Did you try Wersell's? I had very good luck with wheels built there.

Lickton's is an old,old shop. Lots of qualified wrenches. You could do a lot worse.
