Cyclocross - Brake Suggestions: What should I look for and what do you use

Hi all,
I've been looking at getting some decent cantilever brakes and thought about getting some Paul Neo-Retros (though I don't even have a frame yet) but I don't want to destroy my budget (considering I'd rather spend more on a nice frame). I've heard good things about Avid Shorty 4s, but I'm wondering if I spend an extra $30 for a set (front and rear) then I'll end up with something much better.

What do you think? I'm interested in hearing your experience with all sorts of cantilever brakes (Paul, Cane Creek, Avid, Shimano, Tektro, Oryx etc.).

used avid shortys and can confirm they work ok :) - disc brakes work better though :p :D

I have the Avid Shorty 4 brakes. They work perfectly fine with my machined Deep-V rims. They do squeal when they're cold though.

There really isn't anything wrong with the Tektro/CC brake arms but I found the springs on them flaky to the point I pretty much couldn't center them after 6 or 8 months. Empella froglegs are sturdy and light, Paul neo-retros are more adjustable and probably the best build quality. Spooky's and Paul's are spendy, I'm pretty happy with Empellas.

Cane Creek SCX-5 cantilever brakes for $19.

I ordered those Cane Creek SCX-5 fronts for $19 and got Jenson to price the match Speedgoat on the rears from $35 to $30. All said it cost me ~$55 for the front and rears.

I'll report back on how well they work once I get them mounted on my frame.
