I'm planning on taking Amtrak to San Diego and locking my bike to a rack in front of the convention center while attending a trade show for a day. How safe is this? Anyone had their ride stolen there?

I have locked an old mountain bike downtown before. I don't know if I would trust leaving my road bike though:

Im not sure about San Diego, but I know the trainstation in Anaheim has bike lockers that you stick your bike in and I beleive are pretty secure.... Might want to see if the Amtrak station down there has such a thing....
take it inside and lock it up somewhere. the place is pretty big, i'm sure they won't mind.

Our company hosts a conference at the Convention Center each year. They will not let you bring bikes inside. Their are bike lockers in the Sorrento Valley rail station, but I am not sure abut down-town.

I, for one, wouldn't lock my bike along any of the convention center sidewalks, unless it was something I would mind seeing ripped to shreds by days end. A person is good, People suck, and People will vandalize your bike if it's just sitting there. It might not get stolen, but it'll get slashed, scratched, spat on, dorked with, otherwise FUBAR.
The trolley stop just across the street has bike lockers, but their availability is hit-and-miss.
sounds like this is not a good idea then.

If, however, someone knows of a large bike rack area at the convention center, where a lot of bikes are always locked up...then I'd consider it. The whole "safety in numbers" thing. Lock up both your wheels, though.
i would take my front wheel and seatpost with me.
