I'm building a computer and have a question:

One (1) Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz processor

-or-

Two (2) AMD Athlon 64 2.8Ghz Dual-core processors.

What say you?

I'd go with option 3: Wait until AMD comes out with their true quad-core. Last I heard, this August.

Intel's is just two dual cores grafted together. AMD will have four discrete cores in a single processor.

I need to check the performance, but I've heard that the current quad cores by Intel (even though they are pretty much a 2 x 2 configuration) will end up faster than AMD's true quad core. However, time will tell.

In either case, its good to wait, because quad core is a BIG improvement over two cores.

Very true. We won't know until they are on the market.

Can't go wrong with the Intel Core 2 Quad.

It's going to drop to less than $300 soon.

Option A, if you are running tons of multi threaded applications. Might also consider Core2 duo 6700, or extreme.

You could keep waiting forever for the next generation of processors, because next best is always being updated. At some point, you've got to decide to lay down the money and buy it.

Two cores grafter together or four independent cores, they all go through bus and the same northbridge...although the AMD might have an advantage for multi-cores there, since they move some of the external stuff onto the chip to take better advantage of the multi-cores.
