Mountain Biking - winter tires

Anyone have any recommendations on winter tires?

anything old with large tread works. With winter tires you just want something with bite that you dont have to worry about. I used some old Bontroger Jones and ran them in the reverse direction and it did the trick. If you really want something new just buy something aggressive. It wont really make a huge differance seeing as nothing tracks on ice, and snow sheds easily

Make studded tires by drilling screws through the tread from the inside. It works very well, and they work on ice very well also.

Home-made studded tires!: These were my first try with making studded tires. Can't remember exactly how long the screws were that I used, but they were put through an old no-name tire that I had lying around. The screws did not protrude as far through the tire as the picture makes it look.It was an odd angle.

Here is another from the side. I made them by putting the screws through from the inside with a cordless drill. A layer of duct tape along the inside of the tire later, they were installed with a heavy-duty tube. They were very heavy, but it was a cool experiment. If I were to commute with studded tires, I would definitely pick some up from Nokian. While the picture does make it look like the screws protruded from the tire farther than they actually did, they were too long.

Also, if you are talking about riding in snow, drop the tire pressure down to a level that seems dangerously low, maybe 60% of what you normally run. Does wonders for your traction.
