Come say goodbye to summer (or hello to autumn, depending on your view) in the best way possible—with a bike ride. Please join us for a fun day of fitness and Christian (athletic) fellowship at the inaugural Tour de Crossroads cycling event in West Lafayette, Ind., on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007.
We are hoping for the bright blue skies and moderate temperatures that late September brings in central Indiana. Last year we held a practice run for the event, and the weather started off cool in the morning and warmed into the low 70s by early afternoon. It’s an incredible time of year to be cycling through rural Indiana.
Why do this ride?
—The roads are mostly flat, you’re in shape, and this will be a great time to hammer out a personal record
—The roads are mostly flat, and it’s about time you took your S.O. or offspring on a fun, leisurely ride
—The event shirts are a cotton/synthetic wicking blend like Nike Dri-Fit (a $20 value)
—The start will be to the sounds of bagpipes (after all, we are starting from St. Andrew United Methodist Church)
—There will be a free lunch and live entertainment at the end
—The first 100 people to register receive a free Specialized wide-mouth water bottle (a $5 value)
—The ride supports Crossroads, one of the largest youth and young adult ministries in the region
This non-competitive bicycle ride will take place on public roads, and ride leaders will be available to help guide less experienced riders. There will be refreshment stops and roving SAG (support and gear) trucks along the way.
There will be four routes: a flat 15-mile fun ride, a more challenging 40-mile ride, a 50-mile route for Boy Scouts working on their bicycling merit badge, and a 62-mile metric century (100 km).
Proceeds from the ride will benefit Crossroads Ministries, the youth and young adult ministry of St. Andrew United Methodist Church in West Lafayette, Ind. The ride is also a funding ride for the Indiana Bicycle Coalition.
Individual registration is $20. Family registrations are $40, which includes two shirts. Tandem riders may register for $20, although this rate includes only one shirt.
A group rate of $15 per rider is available for groups of 10 or more riders (the registration fee must be paid with one check and all registration forms must be submitted at the same time).
On-line registration is available at Active.com (http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1463993) at http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1463993 There is a small fee for using this service.
Regular registration forms (in PDF format), as well as event information, is available on the event website at http://www.tourdecrossroads.org
On-site registration and check-in will begin at 8:00 a.m., and volunteer-led rides will leave at 9:00 a.m. Instructor-led stretching will be available at 8:30 a.m.
The ride will leave from the new location of St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 4703 N. 50 West, West Lafayette, Ind. (north Salisbury Street just north of the West Lafayette city limit).
