Hi All,
I'm new the forum, so thanks in advance for any help and advice.
I'm looking into putting a compact crank set on a 2003 Fuji Cross. I use the bike primarily on the road with 700x23 tires, and occasionally on crushed rock/dirt trails with the original 700x32 tires. In other words, I don't ride actual cylcocross, I just like the versatility of the bike.
The setup the bike comes with is:
Crank set: Ritchey Pro Cross 48/38
BB: ISIS
105 Shifters/Derailleurs
SRAM R-9, 9-speed cassette, 12/26
I've so far only found two compact crank sets in my price range set up for ISIS. These are:
FSA Gossamer Compact ISIS Crankset 50/34
Leopard Cycles Carbon Crank set 50/34
I don't care much about getting the higher gearing with the 50/12, although I would probably still use it on longer flats and downhills. I would be making the change to get the lower gearing with the 34 chain ring.
I've been messing with bikes for 30+ years, but have never switched out a crank set. If I understand it, I just need to get the right tool to pull the ISIS cranks (Park CCP-4), switch out the cranks, then adjust the derailleurs. I'm assuming I'll need to shift the front derailleur a little bit on the seat tube.
Does this all sound right or am I missing something? Other options I saw are a FSA Compact Cross at 46/36 but I'd like to get down to the 34. Or, go with a full new BB and different crank sets but then you're talking more money and I currently have no issues with how the bike rides, other than wanting some lower gearing.
Thanks in advance.
