Just kidding! It does seem like most of the American public will get a cab or buss before riding any bike.About 99.9999% ?

Just getting our attention.. :)
Worked for me...
I agree in North America it seems like there's a general aversion to using a bike, adults seem feel it'll make them look foolish. I think it's really the 'fear factor', odds are they haven't used a bicycle since they where a kid and think that it'd make them appear childish, which in and of itself is a childish fear. Most adults are way more impressionable than teenagers or children from my experience, that's why you can sell them $30k hunks of steel & glass with sexy commercials...
I also think there's a concerted effort by 'certain' companies to make sure adults don't get on a bike since it would destroy the image they're trying to generate. I think most north american adults that used a bike for a short trip or two would suddenly realize that the car may not be the best way to get around..as we know most trips are under 3 miles..
Cheers!

But on topic, I find it strange too. I once had someone ask me if I was taking the car up to a place just 5 minutes away, when I said "no, I'll bike" they said in a strange way "why bike for such a short distance?". So I asked them, why is it strange to bike the short distance but not to drive a car, especially since its so close? I think alot of people just don't consider it an option, they don't even think of it.

I've just been staying at a holiday house with some friends on the outskirts of Keswick in the English Lake District. The location of the house would be in the upper right quadrant of the picture below. Odd times we needed a few groceries, and rather than drive the one and a half miles to Keswick, wait in a traffic jam, and find a parking space in the place, I'd sling a small rucksack on my back and fly down to the shops on the bike. There was a hundred yard queue at a particular junction near the supermarket EVERY time I went. I just rode past it on the centre line of the road. I am completely convinced, that I passed the same cars still waiting to get into the town centre on my way back out with half a dozen items in my bag. If I'd needed a large grocery order, the bike would not have been the right conveyance, but for most quick errands like returning rental DVDs and buying a few items it was a joyful way of getting things done.
