3rensho, no I am not subliminally fishing, the original post was supposed to be pictures and it did not come out, it was an edit.

Sorry, I bought a Specialized Allez. It is probably from the mid 80's. The decal on the reads, Allez and specialized is very small lettering. It has Campy record hubs laced to Mavic G-40 rims. Nuovo Record rear derailer, Specialized cranks, Campy BB, Campy GS brakes. No indication of tubing or decal. Can anyone tell me more about this bike? I bought it for 20bucks at a resale shop. It has been like friggin christmas over here for a few day's. What a deal, mint condition.

When you say resale shop do you pawnshop or consignment store?

A guy in my neighborhood buys items at garage and estate sales, and re-sells them at his store next to his house. I ride past his storefront on my way to work. His specialty is old jukeboxes, but he always has something new out every day.

Anyone know where to find Specialized info? Like I said, the bike does not say Specialized anywhere, just Allez, and their S symbol. Very nice red paint. Also has a decal designed by Tom Jeeson???? I think that is the spelling, but it is in cursive.

Also has a decal designed by Tom Jeeson???? That would be Tim Neenan. He designed the Expedition and Sequoia as well and built bikes under the name Lighthouse Cycles for awhile too. I think he is now a chef ...

Rumor has it that some of the very first Allez were contract-built for Specialized by 3Rensho in Japan...could yours be one of these? Or is it a myth? Whatever: given the Campy stuff hung on it, it's either a super bargain or a freakin'-super bargain...I'd guess it's Ishiwata tubing, maybe 019.

I'd be lucky to get that stem for $20. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go kick my $175 Centurion Sport DLX now...

In fact, this is exactly what your bike looks like... check it out here (http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/v/Randy+Dugan/allez/).

Reminds me of the Allez that Marcus Sommers from the infamous Shaversport Racing team used to ride.

I hope this helps, and what would be a good estimation of the market value, looks like a 3Rensho.

Can you post a photo of the full bike with wheels?

Given the rarity of a 3Rensho crafted Specialized Allez, I bet that you could get a fair bit of money on eBay. Yours is in fantastic condition and with the right set of photos and the right description, I bet that it could go north of 1000$USD.

You've made out like a bandit but don't tell the guy from whom you bought it, that would just be cruel ;) The funny thing is, that if he sold it to you for only 20$, I wonder what he paid for it? Maybe 10 bucks or so?

nateintokyo
07-28-07, 06:57 PM
.....easily over a grand. 3Rensho track frames in good condition alone can fetch over a thousand.

(it would make me sad but) parting it out might make more money. That said, I'd ride it ;)

I've got to stop coming to this forum. It's too depressing, especially after spending the day going around to garage sales and finding NOTHING!

(Oh, congrats on the sweet find. I'm just jealous.)

What's that headset?

It looks like a mid-80's Specialized headset. The crankset is Specialized too.

By the way, the outer chainring should be rotated so that the pin fits behind the crank arm. It's there to prevent the chain from getting jammed if it gets derailed to the outside.

What size? If it fits I'll double...no I'll triple your investment and offer you $60. The early Specialized frames were pretty nice. With the campy you will be able to restore it and have a real classic. Lugged?

I have yet to see anything that documents this bike as a 3Rensho, she may not be worth a grand but I finished the project and she looks like a million to me. Pictures will be posted Thursday, my camera is out of town.

Picchio Special
09-10-07, 09:03 AM
I'm pretty sure that's a 3Rensho. The really long, narrow lugs are very distinctive, Shimano dropouts are correct, Tim Neeman decal is right. Does it have the offset fork crown (centerline of fork ahead of center line of head tube)? I'd bet cash money that's a 3Rensho-built Allez.

bjke
09-10-07, 09:11 AM
Yes, it is offset, and it appears that entire fork is chrome ( she has a few spots where the paint has flaked off).:)

Picchio Special
09-10-07, 09:14 AM
That, my friend, is a verifiable 3Rensho built Allez. You are one lucky person. That definitely qualifies for deal of the century - though we're pretty early in the century. It's really a beautiful bike. Another tip-off is that the red paint seems just a little darker and richer than some of the later red Allez's - but that can be hard to distinguish from photos.
