Classic & Vintage - varsity ride to save the bomber schwinns

Anybody interested in a bike weekend with the only requirement isthe only bikes allowed are the bomber schwinns. It would create a way of saving the last of the electro-forgeds.Only varsities and continentals etc. allowed.

Should we all wear little looped ribbons on our shirts to show that we are sensitive and concerned about the plight and the uncertain future of that marvel of mid 20th century technology, "Electro Forged Bicycle Frames"? Let's see, what color could we use? Radiant Coppertone? BobHufford will probably vote for Violet, Scooper for Chrome, Sierra for Terra Cotta. :) What are some other unique Schwinn colors which could be used for such a Schwinn support ribbon?

Back on topic. I'll ride my '62 Continental. That Radiant Blue Beauty is indestructable! What Saturday do we ride?

Can I ride my 78 Traveller?

If i had the time i could get away from work, i would get my varsity up and rolling and come.

I don't have an electroforged steed, can I ride a cantilevered ancestor instead?

We're only 150 miles apart, where's the Ride? I can choose any one of four that are finished and ready, with another three in various stages of undress but in-process. No lugged ones but there is one fillet brazed one in the garage rafters.

Pastor bob I see you have a newer style crank and wheels on your continental what brands and model numbers. How about the front and rear derailleurs are they updates also? How many gears is that bike? Is it a 10 speed? I sometimes think about doing that change on the Varsity but then it won't be stock. Are the wheels alloy too? did you have any trouble mounting the newer stuff into the forks and rear dropout? I know where I can get another Varsity or maybe its a Continental I might try that on if I get it. Thanks

As cyclotoine said, I had fun with Campagnolo derailleurs and crankset.

I had the Nuovo Record RD and picked up the other items as great deals on ebay while no one else was bidding. :) The Conti is running its original hubs with new rims and 5 speed freewheel, so the spacing is the same. The bars, levers, and calipers are all original. I adapted a BMX seatpost to achieve the set-back. The Ideal saddle is not original but is similar to what would have come on it from Chicago. I've been riding this '77 Traveler today getting it ready for the new owner. Hate to see it go but it's a bit too small for me. Sure is a sweet ride! :)

Yeah, Bob's electroforged Campy equiped bike is cool.

In honor of the original French components, I went with a Stronglight crank and Huret Duopar Titane rear derailleur on my Varsity. Aluminum rims get two big thumbs up from me as a worthwhile upgrade.

They are. Alex rims sold at bargain prices by Nashbar. They have a simular profile to the original steel rims on my '66 Collegiate. They seem to be holding up under my heft and these rough NH roads very well. They are on the wide side.

By all means. EF is EF! The '77 Traveler owned by McDave just squeaks in due to its Astubula one piece crank. That adds 10 lbs.

Hey, I worked hard to get all the squeaks out of it yesterday! :p It's also the last year for the Astubula crank on the Travelers so it really just squeaked in. :) I do have a Continental frameset that weighs as much as the whole Traveler, but I'm not going to build it just for this thread. :D

Those travellers(70s vintage) are the schwinn babes of Bridgestone! an excellent bike for sure.The reason for this suggestion of a ride is not so much because of the quality but the interesting history from where they came. I constantly watch ebay and see alot of them all the time for cheap in your area. Check Sheldon Brown's site for articles on the history. You could make a movie about it! I'm actually looking for a traveller myself. It is a nice bike.The reason I would like to see a positive spin put on the electro-forged schwinns is to restore part of our history in American cycling.

There was caked on stuff in places where most bikes don't have places. The crud on in and aroung the pedals was unreal. I soaked all the stuff DR's, crank pedals, chainrings and brake calipers in Kerosene overnight and then brushed and brushed and brushed. I finally got the stuff all clean but the weird thing is that this bike is a 64 and the fenders and all the chrome was actually in better shape than my green Varsity, how I'll never know
