Cyclocross - Budget Cross Frame

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
How about this for a nice budget Cross frame: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2007-Cyclo-Cross-Frame-Frameset-Carbon-Fork_W0QQitemZ170132772050QQihZ007QQcategoryZ98084QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I've been looking at those too, but don't imagine they offer a ton of true "value" for the money, considering the steel steerer tube, likely a heavy carbon fork, etc. Other than that, I imagine it's decent.

I rode the full build version last night (Tiagra group etc.). It was not bad. But I wasn't racing, just riding around city streets and off-road a bit.

For what it's worth, it weighs 1.7 pounds less than a Surly Crosscheck frame and fork.

I don't know about you guys but a carbon steering tube on an off road bike scares me. It's not like a road bike. How much weight do you save with a CF steering tube over a steel one? At best a couple of ounces.

i just got the Scattante XRL cross frame, fork and headset from performancebike.com 3 weeks ago. It has a nice aluminum frame and a carbon fork with a aluminum steerer, so far I really like it. It was 250.

Oh, I'm not thinking a carbon steerer would be the way to go at all - I agree that it'd probably be a poor choice for cross. I'm thinking an alloy steerer would probably save some noteworthy weight over a steel counterpart.
