Hey anybody have one of these?

http://www.chessandpoker.com/rubiks-cube-logo.jpg

A friend of mine got one and showed it to me, and I had a difficult time putting it down. It's seems as though it could easily take many lifetimes to solve it, (w/o formal knowledge of the right techniques). It also seems like the kind of invention that could potentially lead to insanity.. (yes, I went out and bought one today). Should I bury it or throw it out? Your thoughts, pls. :)

There's some kid at my old school that carried one with him all the time.

He had no life other than WoW and "The Cube." >.>

I met a girl last year who would have people mess hers up, then she would have it back in order within 6 minutes. I just don't get it.

there are people (kids, mostly) who can do these behind their back (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te7-exovQ8A&mode=related&search=). Literally. Kinda makes ya sick, doesn't it?

I never lasted more than a minute to a minute and a half to have all sides solid colors. The Cube was BORING!

Sure. I also had a pink La Coste shirt with the collar turned up and the pegged hem of my 501s tucked into my untied Dr. J's.

I used to be able to solve it. Of course I had a book that showed you how to do it.

Now that we got the internets there are prolly a million places that show you how to solve it. http://www.nerdparadise.com/puzzles/333/

I loved it in 1985. You growing a mullet to match the Rubick's Cube time zone?

I've "almost" solved it a few times, but never actually truly solved it the whole way.

There were other knock off type games that came out shortly after....The Pyramid, Missing Links, Whip-It.

You can solve it in a minute to a minute and a half? Did you accomplish this with the aid of reading about the techniques?

I had one back in the 80's. Read a book about how to solve it and my best times were typically under a minute. I remember watching some folks solving it on that show "That's Incredible" and they were solving them in like 20 seconds:eek:. High 30 seconds was about the best I could do. Now, every time I see one I've just gotta pick it up and see if I still have "it". I'll usually find "it" but now takes me like 5 minutes or more because I've forgotten what each set of "moves" accomplishes and I end up doing a lot of trial and error. Still fun for those brief few moments.

Nope, first time I picked one up......way back when they first came out. Before the books were even available.

All it is is pattern recognition.

I see.. I take it was one of the original four square/side proto-types :D -?

Have you ever attempted one of the five square across ones?

I was in a "Cube-off" at Six-Flags Over Texas, back in 1981. I made it through three rounds of eliminations. Unfortunately, my fastest time that day was 1:06 and you had to get it in under a minute to move on to the last two rounds, (I think 6 guys made it).

And yes, I have one on my desk, here at work. The guys I work with know that it drives me crazy to see one unsolved, so if I'm away from my desk, they mix it up. When I get back, I have to solve it before I can concentrate on my work.

My wife has promised to get me the 4x4 and 5x5 versions for my birthday, this year. :D

(I think this post just earned me another patch for my geek club vest.):p

Freshman year of college. Both a little drunk and a lotta high. I have the solution memorized. The particular freshman dorms we were at were 15 stories tall and she was on the 13th floor so there was an insanely long awkward silence from the fun stumbling home to getting to her room. When we got to her room I noticed it on the shelf and locked onto it. It rebroke the ice as she has never been able to solve it. Imagination can solve the rest.

For me, the mysteries of the Rubik's Cube were always easier to decipher than the mysteries of how to get into girls' pants.:p

Day 1, the cube;

I got so close, I solved one side and got two of the other sides within one square of being solved. The remaining three sides were five squares each from being solved. By 1am my gf here at work had confiscated it and refused to give it back - (even when I told her it helped me with my quitting smoking), it was all some kind of 'joke' to her, but all the same she refused to hand it back. At 3am she had fallen asleep at her desk, I removed the cube from the front pocket of her hoodie and proceeded where I had left off. Within 15 minutes I had undone all of the previous progress - and was back to 'square one' so to speak.. Around 6am my friend came downstairs and took my cube away again.. At 7am she gave me a ride to my house and then left for church before I could remember to get it back from her, (for some reason I thought it was my bag). I fell asleep thinking that it was all for the best, -that I should just let it go and forget about the cube. By 1pm I was awake again, and I made a stop to the tobacco and game boutique in Harvard Square on my way to work. I intended to purchase a game board and pieces for 'Go' (which I intend to learn to play), but also ended up making an impulse purchase of another cube as well. :D  . .I did however forgo any purchase of tobacco products of any kind, so I think for that I deserve to indulge my cube curiousity a little more and give myself one more oppertunity to solve it.

To be continued. :)

Go is such a great game and I get my ass thoroughly any time I attempt to play online. Nobody I know locally is willing to play so my skill in the game will most likely remain around the level of "moderately brain damaged." Regardless, I still on planning on having a Go board cut from granite or some other stone and set it in a garden once I finally buy a house.

It's good to see the cube is helping you quite smoking. I'm kind of the same way. I smoke mostly as something to do with my hands. That's given me some idea of things I can try to quit.

When I was 14 I shattered my ankle and tore two tendons-had to have surgery. I was laid up in the hospital for a week. A friend of mine bought me a cube. I solved it on my own (no books). I still have one somewhere and every once in awhile I pull it out and screw around with it.

You cant solve it by solving each side seperatly. Try solving opposite columns/rows instead.

Day 2;

I managed to solve two of the sides, - so the cube was only 8 (4 by 4) squares from being completely solved. I talked to this girl at work who said she managed to solve three sides over five months time once when she was bed ridden, I did not think it possible to solve three sides - w/o getting all six sides to match and solving the entire cube. I think maybe she managed to make three sides with matching colors - but w/o achieving matching sides/edges, or maybe I was wrong about the three sided = solved thing. I think it's time to try a different and novel approach.. perhaps it would make sense to try solving opposite columns/rows instead.

Actually, try this:
1)Solve one side.
2)Turn the cube so that side is on the bottom. Now solve the band that goes around the middle.
3)Solve the top.

Done.

Keep in mind that the center square on each side is ALWAYS in the right place. Solve the other pieces around those.;)
