Sorry for the boring, informative post:

A "duck" is a score of zero (most commonly in cricket where you could be "out for a duck"). It can also be used in the sense decribed by gmason above or basically when achieving anything for the first time. Not sure of the original derivation. It is not to be confused with getting your ducks lined up.

... It is not to be confused with getting your ducks lined up.

But that would make breaking them easier. :D

It has been suggested that duck in cricket and love in tennis both originate from the similarity between the numeral zero and an egg of whatever fowl you wish to refer to.

On a similar note, did anyone see the post-stage interview with Boonen where he was talking about how much he wants to win the stage in Paris and how whenever you ride onto the Champs d Elysee "you have the chicken skin."

Took me a couple of minutes to realize that he meant "goose bumps."

Did Sandy Casar do something big for the first time? That's what it means. It's when you get your "maiden" win.
