Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. At what age did you truly (fully) move out of your parents house and on your own (e.g. totally independant)?
Me - 20

Last time...that was exactly why I said "fully"...to cover those who moved out, came back, moved out, came back, etc...

I assume you mean, "and took all your personal belongings from your parents' home"? I mean, if you've "fully" moved out, why use them for storage? ;)
I had all my possessions brought to my house when I was 31. My parents' home is their home, not a storage unit, and nothing of mine remains there.

only parts that I like, not all of her.
Came home from college in summers, so early 20s

18 when I moved out of the house.
But my father had a rental property near where I went to college that he rented to me and a few friends at no discount, moved out of that at 22
Moved out and to Ireland for two years at age 21 (or closer to 22), and was by all definitions independent then. But when I returned home to study, circumstances left me with no choice but to move back in with my folks, for two years. Moved out again two years ago, and that time it was final! So, age 26 for me.
I'm hoping to do so next spring so, 21.

Does anyone here stay close to your parents as a cultural thing? I notice it's American culture to seperate from your parents kinda completely at a certain age...I never understood that concept. What's it for?

I have noticed that this is a predominantly male urge. Women seem to have no problem living close to their folks and actually prefer it (generalization, I know) whereas men feel the need to cut the cord and strike out on their own. I believe this is a cross cultural urge and not at all owned by Americans.

This is true. As much as we may love our family, American culture is much less close family oriented than most other cultures. The idea is to be independent, but that doesn't mean we "cut off" ties with the family (most of the time).

18, halfway through my first quarter as a college freshman. I was completely self-supporting from that point onward. Man, that was almost 30 years ago....

They didn't like it when you told them you wanted to be a priest, because you detested women and wanted to be celibate your whole life giving them no grand children?

Just because I no longer have any personal possessions at my parents' home doesn't mean that we aren't emotionally close or that I don't go see them. They live about half an hour away, but that's just how it worked out earlier. At this point, I'll stay close since they are no longer in great health. We're now more like close friends than parents/child, moreso since my husband died.

Ok. I was 18 when I "left." But I was 31 when I took full responsibility for all the possessions I left behind while I thought I was being "independent."

I moved away from home when I was 17-and-a-half -- which was 29 years ago -- and never went back except for short visits. Took all my possessions with me except for my stereo & my LP collection (which I claimed 4 months later), and my lacrosse sticks (which 5 minutes after I moved out my Dad cut down to make stakes for his tomato plants).
Since then my parents have moved twice, both times to different states, so when I visit them I'm not really "going home", I'm just going to some strange house where my parents live.

Bet they were glad they didn't have to cart your stuff around, too! :p
Yeah, when I go "home" it's more of a visit to see them rather than to be "home" again. I mean, the house is familiar, sure, but it's not my home anymore.

I think the reason its hard for some people to go back to living with one's parents, is parents more often then not go back into the parenting role, and it is hard for an adult to deal with that. Feeling like a failure for having to go to one's parents for help as an adult doesn't help matters.

Cool. After you get a job you'll pay back your tuition in taxes :D
You are probably smarter then me and already realize these things, but there isn't much in the way of job security left in this day and age, so don't go crazy with credit and over extend yourself, and always have a fund set aside just in case of a rainy day!

Story behind my religious booting:
I denounced my Mormonism and because of this, my mom and fakedad gave me one month to leave. Strangely enough, family is the foundation of the Mormon religion. I had just finished my first year of college and they cut me off from that as well (they were paying). I couldn't go to school up until now because financial aid would look at my parent's income and give me the finger.

17. back a couple of times. 16 years latter bought the place.
EDIT: And yes, I already pull the "MY ROOF, MY RULES" when my dad came to visit.
Bought my house at 24.
I don't understand the concept of moving out just for the sake of saying you're living on your own (unless you were kicked out, etc.). I have friends that are totally, completely, flat-broke with no real future ahead of them, but HEY! They're on their own! I moved out with a boyfriend and after we broke up, I moved back in with my parents until I could get my finances straightened out enough to buy a house. I'm not defending those who live with their parents' and have no plans to make a decent living...
