LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Alexandre Vinokourov has hired Floyd Landis' lawyer to defend him on blood doping charges that resulted in his ejection from the Tour de France.

Attorney Maurice Suh was in France on Friday and unavailable for comment, but his Los Angeles office said he was on the case for Vinokourov, who has denied doping.

"I can confirm we do represent Vinokourov," said Pearl Piatt, spokeswoman for the Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher law firm.

Suh, the former deputy mayor of Homeland Security and Public Safety for Los Angeles, joined the law firm as a partner last October. He was previously deputy chief of the public corruption and government fraud unit of the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles.

ESPN.com, which first reported the news, also reported Howard Jacobs, another Landis attorney, was working on the case for Vinokourov, who tested positive for a banned blood transfusion. Telephone and e-mail messages to Jacobs weren't immediately returned Friday.

Suh and Jacobs are defending 2006 Tour champion Landis against charges that he tested positive for synthetic testosterone after the 17th stage of last year's Tour. Landis, who faces a two-year ban and the loss of his Tour title, has maintained his innocence and is awaiting a decision from a panel of arbitrators.

Vinokourov, a pre-race favorite to win the Tour, and his Astana team were forced out of the Tour on Tuesday.

I wouldnt question this move, this lawyer already has a pretty good background in cycling, doping, the tests and the science behind it.

I really wish the Landis, Hamiltons, and Vinos would just go away. I can't wait to hear what this "explanation" is going to be.

What if they just tested positive for banned substances? Sorry, I'm just not much for conspiracy theories.

That's what they said when OJ hired Johnny Cochran (rip).

Im not into consiracy theories, but I do think there are mistakes that could be made by the tests.

I especially dont think vino was doping, and if he was, i doubt he was homologous blood doping.
That is tested for so easily and there is no way to mask it and he knew he would be tested.

I think people attribute to much to "mistakes." Anyways, I'm not going to get into an arguement over who's opinion is right. There are way to many of those types of arguments on BF now already. Those guys have tested positive. I'll go with that until all of the governing bodies and other relevent parties acknowledge that there was a mistake and they reinstate the riders.

I need to become a doping attorney. It appears I would have no shortage of customers.

Vino's siamese twin was drinking the night before, crashed on the road, causing the blood from him to transfer to Vino when the two were sleeping together. In addition, Vino's twin was mad, so intentionally altered the test results to ensure Vino would be kicked out, and leaked them to the press before he had a chance to test the "B" Sample.

Clear?

This is what cyclingnews reported as his excuse -- "I have spoken to the team doctors who had a hypothesis that there was an enormous amount of blood in my thighs, which could have led to my positive test." Yeah, right.

I'm waiting for someone to use the "I took a bottle of Viagra and there was a huge amount of blood in my d#$%, which could have led to my positive test" excuse. :D

Uhh, he was tested twice, and came out positive on both occasions. You think he tested a false positive twice consecutively?

Or maybe it was the whiskey.

I dont know why you are giving Vino so much credit. He has always had a crazy racing style so I dont understand why you dont think that could translate to other things.

Hell in this day and age he could have done something so obvious because he knew he could just deny it because so many people wouldnt believe it because it seemed to stupid.

Now all he needs to do is threaten Greg Lemond and we'll have a new Tour de France tradition. ;)

I think he would've passed, then- I think identical twins have the same blood, to the extent that test is concerned.

Vino's such a copycat. LA's doping doc, bodyguard, cook, and now Landis's attorney.
