Today I took a closer look why my rear wheel always gets out of true so easy.
Very close inspection revealed that my Alesa rim actually had cracks on the sidewall. Dammit, now I need to find a new rim so I can at least ride the event next Saturday.

I can't just buy a new wheel since I have an old 105 shimano 7 speed cassette with a 7 speed index tube shifter. I don't think there are any hubs out there anymore which would fit that cassette.

If I had the dough right now I'd replace my old bike with a 2007 Trek Modane 5.2 SL which the stores offer now for $1999 in a blow out sale.

Buy a rim and have it rebuilt with new spokes? Spokes $20, rim $50(?), build $45

Give them a call and see if they have a wheel on stock, or a rim to lace onto your hub!

Kinda on the same subject, How long can you expect a rim to last (Especially under Clyde loads)? I have nearly 6,000 miles on my stock rims (Matrix 750) and I'm a bit concerned, even though there are no signs of cracking/wear.

I had Bontrager select on my Lemond. At 230, I got 10 months out of them. I did 7,000 miles that year, so maybe got 5,5000 from them. 20/24 spoke wheels

Did not break or crack. Just went out of true just about every ride. I ditched them before any serious problems to avoid injury.

On my stock Trek (Matrix 32 hole) maybe a year 5,000 miles.

Soo.... could not find one darn rim or complete wheel in about 5 different bicycle stores. Dag nabbit. They all needed to order either a complete wheel which would fit my old 7 speed Shimano cassette or one store had a Bontrager Race Lite X in store for 440$ *yikes* and that was it.

So my wife was mentioning I should just go out and get a new bike to replace my 15 year old steel road warrior and order a rim for the old bike and keep it as a back up bike and to pull my daughters one wheeler around.

To the Trek store we went and dropped the 1999$ sales price on a 2007 Madone 5.2 SL. Man oh man... what an upgrade from a 15 yr old chrome moly columbus frame with the 105 group.
Unbelievable how crisp the chain changes gears and how easy it is to ride up hill.

This is one hell of a bike.
