Are track bikes generally noisy? Case i went to my first track day (to watch) and boy where those bikes loud. It sounded like the chain was too tight, but it looked fine. There was so a few rattles are such.

Noisy track bikes can be caused by a few things. The most obvious one is a mis-aligned chain, sounds like a chainsaw!

Chains- New ones seem to run quieter than worn out ones. Some chains have tighter tolernces when new than others and can be loud untill the burn in. The bench mark chain for track is the Izumi V. New its silent, worn its louder than hell and looses its gold look.

Rings- W cut teeth(square bottom) are ever so slightly louder, almost like a rattle than nicer round cut teeth. Sugino uses w cut teeth where as Dura-Ace and Campy are round.

Sprokets- The smaller the sproket the more noise it makes. Sprinters bikes are always louder and part of that is the use of small sprokets.

Monocoque frames and disc wheels echo everything.

Another thing that can contribute to alot of noise is the kind of racing. In a sprint there is a definate acceleration and you will hear the chain noise even more if its two powerhouses. It sounds more like a clawing noise as the wattage goes up. Where as in a points race its more of a constant buzz.

my bike is noisy right now too, and i think the culprit is a cheap cog with too tight of a pinch, the chain has to be forced to seat in between the teeth causing excessive chatter.....i really need to fix that problem....

Can you explain what you mean by 'W cut teeth' vs. round cut?

I have a Bianchi Pista Concept that I have modified for street use (fork w/ brake and bar change) that is noisy as hell. On the track I don't care how noisy it is because there are other bikes that are just as noisy. On the street I would like it to be quiet. I've read in another post about how it could be several factors: chain, ring, and/or cog. To start with I'm wanting to try another chain. Can you recommend a chain to try? I see Wipperman has the 'Star' chain and the '1G8 BMX' chains. Wondering if one of their connectors will work with my current chain too so I can throw it back on for track use.

I was just wondering cause my 3$ chain, surly cog, and some old road chain ring spits out a silent bike.

A W cut chainring has no radius inbetween the tops of the teeth. Its a flat bottom inbetween. Sugino 75 uses this. Its easier to make a million of them that way. Alot of older Jap chainrings are like this. Theres no disadvantage, its just slightly louder. Even Sugino's top end Zen chain ring has a slightly flat tooth profile and it doesnt slow guys down who use them.

The main noises I used to hear at my local keirin track were the rear wheels.
Several guys there used the solid plywood-looking rim.
When they got on the power it was insane sounding.

Track cogs are generally 1/8" and road chains are 3/32", are you possibly running a road chain with a track cog?
