"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Broken Chainstay - Stage 15!! [Spoiler]

I saw this story on Yahoo:

Here is the paragraph that really caught my eye:

"As Armstrong got into his team car, a mechanic showed him that his bike was also in a bad way with the chain stay, which runs between the central cranks and the rear gear mechanism, broken.

If the stage had finished on a descent, the broken frame could have caused him to crash. "

I haven't seen mention of this anywhere else, though. But if he really did break his chainstay, how could he have kept riding? Wouldn't the bike more or less collapse as was riding it? Or, at the very least rob him of some of his power.

Any thoughts on this?

I thought it was a chain problem when he slipped on the bike just after the fall

Maybe thats why he didn't win by 2 minutes ;)

Check the pics on Velonews.com - I don't see anything that looks like a broken chain stay...

Doesn't seem possible that he'd have been able to put ANY power down with a truly "broken" chain stay. Maybe dented/bent?

That is why I'm so puzzled....I checked out he pix on Velonews and it sure didn't look broken. I don't get OLN, so I would be curious what some people have to say after watching the stage.

Some folks get really grumpy if you put results in the title because they want to watch the highlights later.

The chainstay could have suffered a crack either from the crash itself or (it looked like) Mayo riding over it. Yes, I know it's CF and although CF will snap rather than bend, it will do so only at UTS. It is possible there was not enough of a crack or load to result in catastrophic failure... or in other words... it held out long enough. Additionally, it may have been that the strength in the plane of loading was not effected by that particular crack. Remember that CF is anisotropic.

I work for a living and was hoping to watch the stage tonight on OLN. Your idiot subject line ruined that. Thank you.

Peloton: that seems a bit harsh...it seems to me that Bezzo made a mistake that won't be made again.

I hope that you DO watch the race on OLN, as one single line will not diminish the exciting events. On my lunch break at work today, I read the entire thread started by a screaming Koffee ;) and was so excited to go home and watch, even though I knew the outcome and about the crash.

I didn't mean to ruin your enjoyment of the stage tonight, sorry about that.

If you don't expect to see the Tour results in the Road Bike Racing section of BF you can't be too bright. I can see whining about the other areas but not Road Bike RACING eh

As you would have read earlier in the thread, the subject line had been changed and the problem had already been seen and understood by bezzo.

If I don't get live coverage of the day's stage, I won't go on this site because I expect someone to make the mistake of putting a result in the title

But when it comes to the classics.... it sucks cause I'll see the race on tv a week after it occured but someone always puts the result in a thread title before I get to see it. Its annoying.

On stage 8 I avoided all media because I wanted to watch it that night without knowing what was going to happen.

It wasn't that hard to do.

So we shouldnt talk about the race for 24 hours.I've watched it 3 times and its better each time.

No - not 24 hours. Some members may not be able to see the replay within that time. We should have a poll on each stage and only when every member has voted that they have seen the stage will we be able to talk about it.

Sure it may mean that we'll have to wait a number of years for discussion on each stage but at least no one will accidently see the results.

We also need to send letters of complaint to all newspapers telling them that they have no right to divulge the results until they have checked with their entire readership.

I was hoping to kick him in the head (virtually) hard enough that he would never do it again. I was under the impression from my experience on other cycling forums, and from the scrupulous care other users had taken to not post results in the header here, that it was a generally understood practice to not post results in the subject header. My mistake, evidently.

It's funny, I work in a bike shop that caters primarily to performance road cyclists, racers and triathletes, and we have an understanding that no one talks about the results until the next day, not employees, not management and not our clientele. Up until now, no one violated that understanding.

Exactly. It boggles the mind that one would visit a bike racing forum if they truly wanted to avoid any type of tour result.

Maybe we need a special forum- race results: morons keep out.
