Do you have any photos to share? Know what components are on them?

If these are the bikes I think they are, they are about the funniest thing ever to come out of the US bicycle industry.

Huffy, who had licensed the rights to use the "Raleigh USA" brand name in the mid-80s, was a major sponsor of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles (I think it was the '84 Olympics, anyway). Lots of really cool bikes got built by various frame builders, then got Huffy or Raleigh stickers slapped on them before they were ridden in competition.

Huffy came out with its own department store version of the funny bike during this time period. It was hilarious, with a big plastic "aero" cover on the rear wheel, funny handlebars with "U" shaped curves, and a very goofy frame.

As functional bicycles, they pretty much bite. As bits of cycling history, they are well worth $20/each. I wish I could find a photo, but my searches came up empty.

On the other hand, you mention a man's frame and a woman's frame, so these are probably different bikes from the one I am thinking of.

Send photos!

I recently fixed up an old Huffy road bike so I could start cycling. It is a Huffy and it has the word "Marathon" on the top tube. I think it is from the 80's. It is a 5 speed with Shimano eagle rear derailler and a stem shifter with "333" on it. I have no clue what type of brake levers it has.

"....Race founder and fourth placer John Marino also rode a very unique machine: a full-aero-tubed custom steel frame built by Huffy Olympic bike wizard Mike Melton. Its tear-dropped tubes were adorned with the wind tunnel tested Shimano Dura Ace AX line of aerodynamic components...."

If anyone know any more about the Huffy line of road bikes please post, I am interested in any findings. The thing I noticed when fixing up the Huffy was that the front fork was rusted half way through on one side. I did not want to risk it craking all the way through, so I I cut it off and welded a new piece of steel in the rusted spots place. It ride very well even over bumpy roads.

I just sold this Huffy Aerowind this weekend. It has the tear dropped "aero" tubes mentioned earlier. Allthough I sold it for way to much money, I am kinda starting to have sellers remorse.

Nice, the stem, brake levers and drop handlebars look same as the ones on my Huffy.

Nice Aerowind. I haven't seen the ladies version since they were new.
Huffy marketed some bikes with a similar paintjob to the actual team bikes, red with blue forks.
Raleigh USA also did some that way, and they're a bit more common, at least around here.
AND here's the dept store TTT bike Forbes mentionedhttp://www.mindspring.com/~sblackstone/olympia.jpg

steve, i kinda like the looks of that bike. Is it yours? Do you have a "riders view" of those handlebars?

Sweet. What type of rear derailler does that huffy have. Is it possible to find clippless or road pedal that would fit that bike. I would try and find some pedals but I know I will uprade to another bike in the future. That red frame is nice.

I have that bike in pink. Has Shimano Tourney stuff on it. The seatpost mounting is ridiculous

Maybe to you, but from someone who has dealt with more then a fair share of fixing and flipping department store junk on Craigslist, I can say that they have a better chance of tightening correctly then the majority of cheap-o bikes with binders done in the conventional style. No chance of the post rotating either - only a cheap saddle binder to worry about, which one can swap for a clamp-on micro adjuster...

I can already envision some hipster making a sinfully ugly fixie out of it (which, I hate to say, is pretty much all it is good for!)

That's it! Thanks Steve.

Any interest in posting more pics of your other Raleigh/Huffy labeled track bikes? You have a truly amazing collection (or was I supposed to keep that quiet?).

Yours,

FBB

So, I'll answer a few questions at once.

The cheapie TTT bike is mine, I don't have a riders view of the bars yet. I have to do some picture taking soon.
The rear derailleur is whatever shimano made cheapest back in 84. I don't recall the model at the moment, maybe a lark or eagle?

I can post some pics of the actual team bikes, should I put them here, or start a new thread?

The rear derailler may be an eagle. All I can say even though it was cheap back in the day, it still works just as good as it did when it was new. One day when I was riding another cyclist past me with his new low end road bike. His derailler and chain was making so much noise I laughed and thought too myself " my bike is two decades older than his and it sounds as quiet as a mouse."

I saw a "Greg Lemond" autographed Huffy 10-speed at an auto swapmeet recently. Total, utter piece of crap.

'84 Huffy 'Concours' evidently made by Motobecane for Huffy during the '84 promotion.

Didn't Greg LeMond ride a Huffy? :p

According to my 1986 Program for the World Championships held in Colorado there is an ad with Greg Lemond on Huffy. The ad says "Greg Lemond will be riding a bike specially designed and hand built at the Huffy US Cycling Federation Technical Development Center. Bikes built there won four gold, three silver and two bronze medals at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, second place in the 1985 Tour De France(ridden by Greg Lemond) and first place in the 1985 Coors Classic(again ridden by Greg Lemond)."

Now who was building these bikes is a good question? And somehow I just can't remember or picture Lemond on a Huffy when he was battling it out with Hinault in 1985?

Balindamood-

Your re-do is nice, but I what I really liked about the original was the pirate flag attached to the brake lever.

The regular road bikes the top level guys rode were mostly Serottas, with maybe a few others. Riders at that level usually get whatever they want and the team supplies paint and decals.

The bikes for teh team time trial, team pursuit, Kilo, and pursuit were made in the Huffy technical center, mostly by Mike Melton.

I've seen about 20 names claimed as builders of olympic bikes for 1984, far more than should be possible. Unless they worked for the technical center at some point, like Koichi Yamaguchi in 1988-9

I'll put up a pic of one of teh team pursuit bikes tonight in a new thread

I need the details, steve. I've been jonesing for a "real" huffy for ever. If you look closely, this is bob roll beating the crap outta a "real" serotta huffy in the paris-roubaix.

stevebirm

I just love paris-roubaix. Forget that 3 week long tour where you team can protect you, and a guy can get pretty high up in GC without winning a stage. P-R is real racing, especially at places like this one.

There was a Huffy/Sserotta on Craigslist in I think Atlanta that was supposed to be Bob Rolls. It was also on ebay about 2 years ago. The same guy had a team time trial bike from 7-11, which will get it's own thread as soon as I can take a couple pics.

Well, I am almost done with the hipster Huffy Aerowind fixie. Trust me, it's sinful. Granted, I found the archived thread with these pictures, and will be happy to post my pics when I reassemble the bike in the next few days. I ripped it apart and stripped the paint and repainted it and put several clearcoats on top. I have put velocity dv rims with flip flop hubs. Micheline 700c-23mm tires.Kept the lower bracket. Sprocket is a wood 14t.
Question I have is which direction does this kooky seatpost go? Is the open end or the blocked end of the mounding mechanism on top?

rhenning
09-08-07, 07:37 PM
Blocked end is on the top and you need a nut and bolt inside the frame to tighten it. The nut goes inside the slot in the seat post. If you look at it from the open end it goes in the top cross part of the "TEE" slot. I included a picture and if you need a closeup I can do it tomorrow. Roger

09-08-07, 07:47 PM
Thanks Roger,
The nut was actually still in the post and I remembered how it assembled, but as per usual, I didn't know which end was up...
Also, I am not sure you want it but I have the rear wheel to my aero if you were keeping your Aerowind origonal. If you want it I would put it aside for your ride instead of throwing away.

Wait... wait... are these worth money? A few weeks ago I carved one up and welded it to the top of a Free Spirit to make a tallbike because, frankly, the idea of a Huffy-made "aero" bike made me double up with laughter. all the components had nasty plastic molds over them to make them look more aerodynamic, but the thing weighed as much as some light pickup trucks. Please, give me more information on this ridiculous bike...

I am not restoring mine. All I saved from the original bike was the frame, crankset and pedals. The rest of it is a bunch of 70s/80s parts I had. Roger
