Classic & Vintage - Can I use a 7 speed Uniglide cassette?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Can I use a 7 speed threaded Uniglide cassette on my existing hub, which has a 6 speed threaded uniglide cassette? It looks like there's room. The 7 speed takes a UG or thin chain.

I believe there were a couple different models of freehubs, one that would take a 6/7 speed without trouble (FH1051, I think is the part number), and one that would only do 6 speed (FH1050, maybe?). At worst, (I think) it'd only require swapping out the freehub body. (Harris Cyclery has some available for $20, pn. FW8946.)

I don't think those are uniglide compatable. It say's it's STX-RC which means no threads and it says it's 11 tooth compatible.
You're going to have to make sure your's is 7 speed compatible or you will be looking for a used 7 speed uniglide freehub. I recommend updating to the hyperglide freehub (the one suggested above) and a new 7 speed HG cassette.

You might want to post this in the Mechanic's forum.
Sheldon hangs around there from time to time.
From this link-
"Spacer washers would fit between each pair of sprockets. 5- and 6-speeds used 3.65 mm spacers, 7-speed generally 3.1 mm...."
So a 6 speed would use 5? spacers @ 3.65 or 18.25MM worth?
A 7 speed would use 6? spacers @ 3.1 or 18.6MM worth?
I guess it depends if you have enough room for the thickness of 1 more cog? (2.35mm?)
Sorry I can't give you a firm answer.
This is friction shifting?
Yes, It's friction shifting. Thanks for the effort, guys. I'll see what the mechanics say... I'm pretty confused now.
