Foo - Better than bottle deposits
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Bottle deposits help keep highways clean and homeless drunk, but they environmental impact is small. In places that don't have a deposit they have recycling centers that the garbage trucks goto before the landfill and have inmates sort it.
We need reusable bottles, instead of getting a can of soda at the vending machine you walk up with your designer bottle and put a buck in and its like a fountain drink at 7-11. Instead of buying cereal in boxes we can have tupperware containers that reseal so the cereal stay fresh longer.
As incentive there should be a gradually climbing tax on packaging.

5 cents isn't enough anymore to get people to stop breaking glass bottles all over the roads, I'll say that. Even the 10 cents in Michigan doesn't do as much as it once did, according to my parents.

donnamb, no, I live in Michigan and though I usually keep returnables separate, its not worth the time to go up to the store and stand at the return machines for half an hour for 20 bucks (I separate work and homelife, and refuse to make money while not at work). I leave them at the road for the homeless or the garbage men. When I play disc golf there is a homeless fellow that walks around and picks up all the beer cans all day long, noone else will.

I like my cereal in boxes, my soda in plastic bottles. my coffee in Styrofoam, my baby seals clubbed, and my trees UN-hugged!
