My single speed road bike conversion has been sporting mustache bars for over a year. I couldn't reach the drops of the original drop bars. I am building up a fixed gear bike (just for fun) and want to use the mustache bars for it. So, I bought a Nitto Technomic tall stem and put the drop bars back on my SS commuter this morning. The top of the drop bars are even with my seat.

Went for a test ride today. The initial opinion is that the drop bars and a tall stem are great for coasting. The top bar hand position gives a way more upright posture than the mustache bars. Climbing steep hills on the single speed was easier with the mustache bars. They were wider, extended farther forward, and were lower in the forward hand positions.

The mistake that many cyclists seem to make with drop bars is having their handlebars too low. Then there is such a huge drop from their saddle to handelbar that they can't comfortably ride in the drops. I ride with my handlebars relatively high, about even with the saddle height, but I can comfortably ride in the drops indefinitely. Most of the cyclists I know who have low handlebars never, ever ride in the drops.
