Classic & Vintage - dura-ace, BB's & front derailleur on questions

This forum has become my daily addiction! My early 80's Pinarello Treviso with all campy components and downtube shifters is great for slower/social, group rides. When i'm not riding, it hangs out in my living room on a work stand as it is so beautiful to me - being a bachelor has it's benefits!. I want my newer, late 80's Pinarello frame to have the safety & convenience of modern components as it will become my regular, higher mileage bike. Please don't flame me for this travesty!

Hopefully someone can help me with some questions related to building up this frame using a donor dura-ace bike I bought for a reasonable amount. This is my first attempt at building up a frame so i bought a donor bike which is a newer (early 2000's) motobecane which someone built up using 90's dura-ace components including the wheel hubs. Everything seems to work beautifully - what a fantastic set of components! The motobecane has been getting more use than my 'daily driver' 2003 specialized allez sport so i'm reluctant to strip the motobecane until i have all the components on hand to finish the pinarello.

The pinarello currently has a "36x24F" Campy BB installed that has tapered, square crank spindles installed (not sure if that is the correct term, it's where the crank arms attach) of unknown condition. Would my dura-ace crankset work with the existing Campy BB? Am i correct in assuming the motobecane's dura-ace BB won't work in my Pinarello due to threading differences?

On the crank arms it shows FC-7410. If so which BB's are compatible with my Pinarello (approx 69mm wide BB tube) and my dura-ace crank set. With the components installed on the motobecane i can't find anything visible about the thread type or get a proper measurement of the BB width. Poked around on Sheldon's excellent site but didn't find what i was looking for as I'm such a newbie about components and his website is sometimes like trying to drink from a fire hydrant.

Next question is about the front derailleur: the dura-ace derailleur is bolted to a clamped on fitting on the motobecane but looks like it should work with the brazed fitting on the pinarello. Is that correct?

lotta questions there, but I'll give you a "nutshell" answer and then you can refer to Sheldon when you want real expertise. Your Italian BB shell is 70mm wide (may have been "faced" agressively and lost 1mm) and has 36x24 threading. You newish Moto is likely a Taiwanese and has 1.37" x 24 and a 68mm width shell (British), Your Shimano crank needs to be used with a JIS taper spindle (I assume a FC-7410 is still square-taper) so the Campy spindle will NOT be a good fit. Easiest solution is buy a Shimano BB unit (sealed or open) with Italian threading (which will automatically be sized for the 70mm shell width) and the correct spindle length. This 'correct spindle length' may be where you need to consult Sheldon, Phil Wood Co., or some other source if you can't get to it through your own measurements and best guessing...maybe you just pick the spindle size they sell for a double and you're in.
If the FD is a braze-on that has been attached with a clamp adapter (what it sounds like to me) then remove it from the adapter and it should fit the FD tab on your Pinarello.

First of all, how could you defile a Pinarello like this? What blasphemy. The motobecane is probably a great riding bike. Why not enjoy the Pinarello for what it is?

1) Correct, you must purchase a new italian threaded shimano BB specific to your dura-ace, It will all depend on year. If it's square taper you just need to get the right length. If it's splined well then I dunno. I don't even know when those started. You are in C&V afterall.

I don't consider it defilement since i bought this Pinarello Asolo as a bare frameset and i'm not removing an existing component group from it. By building up the frameset this way, i will put a lot more miles on it than if i built it up period correct and i'll enjoy the frameset for what is. Each to his own.

I enjoy my Pinarello Treviso for the beautiful, 'correct' vintage bike it is.
