Bike Barn has a new location on Mason Rd. in katy..
I'm from N. Houston and I like the guys over at Bike Lane on FM1960, it's a ways to travel from the west side though.

I have had good luck with all of the Bike Barn locations. I think the new Katy store was formerly Acme Bikes which was excelent also. If you aren't that far west I think Bike Barn has a store on Westhiemer near Wilcrest. There is a good shop on Dairy Ashford near Tully stadium but I don't remember the name.

The shop is called Bicycle World & Fitness; here is their website: http://bicycleworldandfitness.com/ I have a friend who purchased a bike through them and had nothing but good things to say about them. However, they are a bit on the die hard biker side and tend to want to go all out he said. Another shop that a friend of mine suggested was Performance Bicycle, they have a location currently at FM 1960 & Stubnier Airline. They are building a new location on Westhimer that is suppose to open soon. Here is a link: http://www.performancebike.com/inform/store_profile.cfm?Store_ID=109 Yet another one to check out would be Lone Star Bicycles off of 290 near Spring Cypress Road (can't find their site).

All three of the shops mentioned here are my choices. Good Choices, Dr. Nate!
BW&F is at Dairy Ashford, just North of Memorial. Good folks there. Owner is Chris Holmes. Lone Star Cycles is good for high end bikes -- Pinnys, Cannondales, etc. Performance has good specials, cheap gear and shoes and good deal on off-brand bikes.
Bikesport, inside the loop, is a great bike shop for Triathletes and high end road bikes with brands such as Litespeed, Cervelo.

I like the people at Bikesport, a small shop, very friendly and helpful... my only pet peeve is that as soon as you walk in you hit the front counter, and they're like "what can we do for you?" I like to walk in and browse around a place a bit before asking a question or requesting something. Every time I've been there it's like "What can we do for you?" "I need new tires!" "Here you go, that'll be $120!" <CARD SWIPE> "THANKS, BYE!" and then I'm out of there, having not looked at anything except what I walked in for.
I guess it saves me money by not browsing? Thanks Bikesport!

Some retail shops are slow and thus seem to over help.

Thanks all! :)
Do those stores have decent used selections?
I browse at Bikesport all the time. They are indeed friendly and helpful, but I have had no trouble being left alone to browse when that is all I want to do. The staff is highly knowledgeable, unlike some places where many employees are rank beginners at cycling.
Performance Bike just opened up across the street from REI in West Houston. Finally!

I went to Bicycle World And Fitness off of Dairy Ashford last week to buy some new shoes and pedals. I dealt with a guy named Alex, he was super cool and really helpful. I was very shocked, this is the first shop that didn't try to push the most expensive product on me. Two thumbs up to Bicycle World And Fitness.

I have been going to Bike Sport for years. The best shop in town and the most professional. They have a website.:beer:

I bought my first real roadbike (Cannondale) from them way back when they were called Bikes and Backpacks on Weslayan.
But they are not really in west Houston.
