I need a shifter mechanism for a three speed. This hub is from a 59 Schwinn and it is my understanding that Schwinn used a German company for some of these instead of SA. My question is will the SA shifting trigger work on this German hub. I have been told they are nearly or a identical internally. Thanks

The hubs are not identical internally, but AFAIK any three speed shifter will shift any three speed hub.

Sturmey-Archer hubs require a different length of pull than Shimano Hubs. One is equally spaced between gears, and the other pulls progressively more cable. As far as the other European hubs, I think they are the same as S-A.

My guess, and it's just a guess, is that Sturmey stopped making the AW for a couple of years, and I suspect the people at Schwinn had doubts about the durability of the SW (which was supposed to replace the AW), so they opted for a license built clone.

Might have been other issues too, parts inventory, service training, etc. But I'd be surprised if there wasn't some SW connection.
