We are going to be spending a week on Coffee pond near Sebago Lake State Park next week Starting on Sat the 4th. Just wondering if there are any must see/do bike rides or shops I should check out. Cheers Scott
Huh,
hever heard of coffee pond, where is it exactly? For tourist traps... North Conway
is something of a mecca. If you like coffee the artsy coffee shop to the right of the train station is good (not something I say often, I am a coffee snob).
Shopping, some good restaurants, a movie theater and of course the train.
Ask directions to Black Cat trail. It's only 1/3 mile and offers a nice view of the valley. If you want more challenging hiking, there are plenty of places :)
Portland isn't far. Neither is Freeport, AKA Outlet Heaven.
Now, bike rides, that depends on what you want. On a scale of one to to 4 where
one is Lance and 4 is someone who hasn't ridden in 20 years where are you?
The State of Maine publishes a booklet of bike rides free. A lot of bike shops in
the area have a few.
One of the best is the Lighthouse Loop. I think you can find directions online.
Start early so you can park at Two Lights and then eat there when you're done.
Perhaps my favorite ride is this. Park in the Shaws shopping center on Rte 1 in Falmouth. Go left, left at the light and left onto Rte 88. Then left onto Tuttle Rd. Follow Tuttle which will become Blanchard. A while (3/4 of a mile?) past the Cumberland Fairground take a left onto Blackstrap. The turn is not marked. But it's less then a mile to an intersection with a car dealer on the corner. Just up the road a bit is a store with a bathroom. Get back on Blackstrap and turn left onto Mountain Rd.
Take the first right after the light onto Falmouth Rd.When the road ends go left. When you see a sign for RTE 9 take a right. That will bring you back to Rte 1. This is under 30 miles, lots of rolling country.
Another good ride is park at Kezar Falls go up Re 160 to Conway (take a break) and then down Rte 153 and left towards Freedom on Cushing Cor (that's what Mapquest said, I forget). This will take you back to the highway Kezar Falls is on. The road to Freedom is the prettiest part of the ride.
Bear Notch loop is a good ride (ask in North Conway) and the Kancamangus Highway
is a good if very challenging ride.
