It's tough to argue against the value there. I'm not in the market and it still makes my wallet tickle.

Is it possible to get it with a 53/39 instead of the compact 50/36?

I'd think about getting this and swapping my Ultegra 9spd onto it and selling it to my Bro-in-law for $500 who's looking to get a road bike...

I'd want the wheels and groupo... hmmm, but I don't want a compact...

I would say no, but I am not Mike. The key to his prices is no substitutions.

FWIW, you can largely take a new part like that and sell it on ebay and get as much as it would cost you to buy the different size on ebay. In fact, you would probably make out ahead as most seem to sell full size to buy compacts, you want to go opposite.

I sold my DA crank on ebay after a few months and made enough to buy a Shimano R700 compact and have money left to pick up some odds and ends. Yeah, a downgrade, but it is more of what I wanted.

This is the downside of BD.com. I think it is worth it.

Mike - when will you be getting that Motobecane Cyclocross with full Ultegra back in stock? I don't have the cash-in-hand right now but hope to soon. I was bummed to see it's not in stock anymore. Is this temporary or permanent?

Mike, what about size? I am 5'10-1/2" and ride a 56 Trek and 55 Litespeed -- would I get the 54 or 56?

This IS tempting - much better value than spending $ upgrading wheels and shifters on current beater bike - better to just buy this as my NEW beater bike.

sizing is not the major issue that many would like it to be
of course, your bike needs to fit
but there are lots of adjustments that can be made

little history from an old guy:
During the bike boom of the 70s almost all bikes came 17", 19", 21", 23", 25"
that's right; every 5cm -- and customers were happy; real happy
sure, we ordered some custom frames that were made to the cm
but 99% of bike shop buyers purchased from stock bikes and just rode their bike and smiled and loved it

counter to what many say; to some extent you are more likely to get your 'best' size on-line; as we have nothing to gain by pushing a a given size; we stock everything -- many dealers are forced to reccommend what they have in stock

my opinion; you need a 56cm and will be happy with it.

The BikeForums have now become the equivalent of those rural radio programs where people call offering to sell or looking to buy.

I am asking Mods to do this:

Please - create a market forum, where people from BD and other vendors can shill for their products, while leaving the Road forums clear from this. Please.

I think based on years of personal experience that size is more critical than you suggest; though it's 97% likely to be either 54 or 56. To illustrate, I was test riding Scott bikes the other day. I was definitely a 54 in Scott, despite being a definite 56 in Trek. So, if your frames are sized more like Trek I'd choose 56; otherwise choose 54. Any clue how your sizing compares to these national brands?

+1. So a sub-forum is created for marketing. What's that leave for the rest of the roadie forum? Questions on which carbon bottle cage is best? Whether Dura-Ace is better than Force? Tales from the crypt authored by the fictional Ryanf? Which paint color makes your bike faster?

Nobody's forcing anyone to read any specific thread. Don't be a troll.

Jesus, did someone hide your fiber lately? People have questions about BD, and instead of the normal conjecture and bullsh*t, Mike answers the question. Usually, it's someone trying to either be a wiseass or giving an answer that has no basis in fact.

A forum rule that Mr BD had to agree to in order to post:

Solicitation... Refrain from using BikeForums to advertise your site, items for sale, commercial services or website.

If becoming an advertiser here waives that, I'd like to hear it from a mod.

BTW, I always thought forums were for open discussion of topics within established guidelines, not for use as a direct marketing tool.

Excuse my ignorance being new to the biking world but i'm looking at the bike mentioned and the website states the frame is 2.7 pounds ( aluminum frame). Now when i look at your $1895 carbon frame bikes, the frame also weighs in at 2.7 pounds. As i said, i'm new to the biking world but i would have assumed the carbon frames would be lighter.

Good question:
Some aluminum frames are heavier than some carbon frames
Some carbon frames are lighter than some aluminum frames
and actually some steel frames are lighter than some carbon and some aluminum frames

a very light bike can be built with carbon fiber frame; aluminum frame; steel frame; or Ti frame

I have a Bianchi EV4 aluminum/zinc/magnesium alloy frame that weights just a hair over 2 pounds (3#2ozs including full carbon fork and headset). Definitely a huge range of weights across all frame materials.

Just sent you a PM. I'm interested in almost everything besides the wheels. Give a shout if you'd be interested in working something out in terms of 'sharing' an order.

To anyone else: What kind of resale do you think I could expect on a brand new pair of AC 420s? Guess I'll do a 'completed auctions' e-bay search this evening.

You are telling me to get a life?:) You wish you had my life!:p I was just stating a fact in response to someone saying BD could come on here and do whatever they wanted. They can't. Simple as that. And try DECAF!:D

Also, please point out what I said that colors me a BD hater. If my own mama was on here hawking her wares I'd take the same exception. Rules are rules.

I, like you, don't care who buys from them. At all. Even a little. I hope they sell boatloads! But I do care that someone is trying to use my interests to get to my wallet in an enthusiast's forum by posing as a friend to cyclists. The cat's got a business to run, and last I heard, people ran them to make money. More power to 'em, just NIMBY, please.

At least this thread is where it belongs now....the Coupon Forum, AKA Dealsville.

the ride might be a little harsh for some?

if it will replace a 10-year-old bike you will be amazed at the difference...

bang-for-buck quotient on this bike at that price is imo about the best you'll ever find...

Thanks for asking
we have had some problems with our single e-mail address system on verio
so we just now put up this contact page

http://www.bikesdirect.com/contact.htm

now there are several e-mail addresses answered 6 days a week
and on most sundays I may answer those on aol myself
and we even put up a blog for those that get e-mails bouched off aol & verio [not many]

e-mail is imperfect; but we intend to get it where everone can get us everytime they try
