Just for grins I entered a local Duatholon here in the OC. Figured I was'nt going to take top 3 (or even top 50) on a geared bike so why not do it fixed.

Ran a 44*16 gear (rolling hills on the course). Best part of it was passing guys on trick carbon fiber Kuotos and Orbeas on all the climbs, including Aero helmets. Meanwhile I was plugging away on my $500 Langster.

Have not seen the final results but I finished 5min faster than expected.

Things I learned:

A fixed gear is not that bad given the distance was only 24 miles. Only way to take advantage of passing people on the climb was to downhill more aggresively. I counted around 5 people I passed on the climb to have passed me again on the downhill.

Running sucks..especially the second 5k.

Sweeeeeet! :D

The second run totally sucks @$$ though... I did a duathlon earlier this year. I was fine on the first run and the bike portion, but the second run was terrible. :(

Next year i'm going to try doing a triathlon on my fixed gear. :) 14 miles of flat terrain should be managable, right? :D

Funny I heard someone saying at the start line.."Duathlon is nothing more than a Triathlon for people who can't swim"..

awesome job man. there's a guy who brings his fixie to our time trials in orlando. i thought about it, but i spent too much on my TT bike to not use it. it'd get jealous of my raleigh.

and yeah, the second run is always debilitating. very hard to train for.
