I had a bad day in the saddle. Had an Asthma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asthma) attack due to the high levels of smog in the air.
Jon, get in to see your doctor or a pulmonary specialist who can prescribe Albuterol or, better yet, if you need it, Foradil. You should carry one or both with you. I have pretty severe asthma, so I always have albuterol with me. Sorry you had difficulty.

Jon is being modest. He was barely breaking a sweat all the way up to Dawson's. He said he only rides 2 days/week... I'm not sure how he stays so strong. Must be the Petacchi juice!

W Carbon Dude I'm glad you recovered . I was feeling like there was smog in the air, towards the end of the day any deep breath I took was a little painful. I haven't felt that in a long time.
Oh , and don't listen to Ovoleg, next time he better come to the mountains and prove that he can beat an old women up the hill:D

Other people brave the broken pavement of Mt. Gleason road besides me? The two miles to the summit after the dirt section near the corrections camp are the most fun. Sure a few times a year. I've been told that the dirt road starting at the Proson Camp only goes a couple of hundred yards then it's paved on up to Gleason I've never done that part yet. Maybe this time.

I'm so glad the way this ride turned out after being anxious all week. It would be a tough act to follow, but we should go up there again, soon. Oleg doesn't have to come and see what he's been missing, he can race around the Agoura corridor with Shai and Manny.

I had a bad day in the saddle. Had an Asthma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asthma) attack due to the high levels of smog in the air. I felt great untill we started to come back over Dawson Saddle. Then I couldn't breathe had to take real short breaths and couldn't get my heart rate up so climbing was slow. Anyways, it was great to see everybody out there, Vance and Keith were nice enough to slow down for me;) Thank you Sarah for trying to get me to get a ride down the mountain but I was feeling better after Big John gave me some Petacchi juice (http://www.drugs.com/albuterol.html), thanks John!
Here are my pathetic stats for the day.

I don't know how bad your asthma is, but I had it really bad. It was to the point I had to hit the inhaler 4-6 times an hour, . I hated having that sense of inferiority when I would train hard, have good times, then on a group activity, a bad asthma attack strikes and half the group slows down and watches out for you, not what us competitive types like.
Today I pretty much do whatever I want to and dont worry about asthma. Regardless, see a specialist, there are medication out there now that mitigate most attacks.

Hey had a great time on Saturday. Even though I got to Charlton Flats at about 8:30. (this is tough to admit as a guy, but took the wrong turn off the freeway, should have known the big "2" was the right exit)
Did finally catch up around 11:00 or so. Saved by a flat.
Valley girl and I just trying to convince ourselves that the next peak was just around the corner. Yikes a six mile downhill on the way out means there is a six mile climb on the way back.
Oh yeah, many thanks to water boy....

I have seen a pulmonary doc and he gave me two inhailers, one for preventative and one rescue. I had the rescue one in my bag, at the car. I haven't needed it for the last few rides so I didn't think to bring it. You bet I'll have it with me next time and the next.

Dude, I couldn't break a sweat. I could barely get my heart rate over 130 as my average is usually 177 on climbs. Plus I normally don't sweat that much anyways, I don't know why. I could be climbing up a grade and pass people just dripping and I'm just barely breaking a sweat. Must be in my genes.

Smog at 8000ft? I wonder. I've always thought that the smog stayed down in the basin. The AQMD web site said it was moderate in Santa Clarita on Saturday. They have a reporting station around Chilao but I couldn't find a reading for it. I'm not a Dr. so I wouldn't speculate as to the cause of your asthma attack Jon but I do know that a lot of the pro peleton has asthma problems. I guess that is the sourse of the Petacci Juice you were talking about. Many people on Saturdays ride were really pushing to the limit, maybe the body says enough is enough.:)

Bob, as you know, I suffer from pretty moderate to severe asthma. In my experience, there is sometimes no clear cut reason why I suddenly have a tightness in my chest, difficulty breathing (mostly on the exhale), a headache, nauseau, excessive sweating (or opposite, no sweat and all) and overall feeling of lethargy. When I get these symptoms on a ride, I know immediately what is going on. Albuterol may help but sometimes it's too late and my body, already being pushed to its limits (especially on the type of ride you guys did Saturday), will not cooperate no matter what I do, and it truly is a miserable experience, not to mention life threatening (and that isn't hyperbole). It's really never safe according to my pulmonary specialist to finish a ride in these circumstances but sometimes I do, sometimes I don't -which you yourself have seen when I abort a ride and head back suddenly (most times this has happened it has been due to the asthma, but on a few occassions not so, and instead due to bonking or laziness:p). Bottom line, there could most certainly have been smog on that ride Saturday, especially considering Jon started at the bottom of AC. The air out here is really never clean even up in the mountains (albeit cleaner than at sea level). Regardless, if Jon has asthma, there are many factors that could have affected him on the ride. IMHO, he needs to see a specialist immediately to determine the severity of his asthma if, in fact, that is what he has. It won't affect his riding. The specialist can simply start treating it and provide him with Albuterol to carry with him.
Note: I received notice that Albuterol will be outlawed in 2008. I don't know what the alternatives are going to be but it scares me since I do ride remote rides and do not wish to stop doing so.

Oops...didn't see this before my last post. Good to hear, Jon. Actually, for some reason, I feel you've aleady told me this and due to my ditziness, I forgot. Yes, DO carry the inhalers! And take a couple of hits before you start the ride (especially on one up in altitude). Also, did he prescribe you Foradil or Advair?

Sounds like you'll be okay, M.E. From wiki:
U.S. regulators have announced that albuterol inhalers containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) will be banned in the United States beginning in 2009. This type of asthma inhaler had previously been given "essential use" status, exempting it from a national CFC-production ban. However, GlaxoSmithKline, Ivax Corp., and other manufacturers are expected to produce adequate supplies of alternative inhalers by 2009 and will offer discounts for those who cannot afford the newer versions, which cost about $20 more.

Thanks, Vance. :) Even I hadn't done my research or looked up any news on this. I just figured I'd ask my doc next time I see him.

You should go to the summit next time you're up there. From the prison camp it gains about 1000 feet in 2 miles so you do get a nice workout. It's too bad that the pavement sucks because you really can't go very fast coming down. I went up there in June and if I get my garmin back from repairs today I'll head up there again. I got Azmacort (triamcinolone acetonide) for once daily and ProAir*HFA (albuterol sulfate) for "as needed" I wend to the doctor right before the Grand Tour and before that I could ride 75 miles then suffer the rest of the day. With my inhailer I finished the Grand Tour feeling good. Since then I haven't ridden any centurys until AC a month ago (95 miles mostly downhill:D) and I felt fine that day so I thought AC would be ok again, boy was I wrong.

Only half is biased? That would give it a huge advantage over the media, gov't, academia, you name it. I find Wiki the most useful starting point on many of my queries.

What I really meant is that its biased on behalf of the retarduses. ANYONE can make a wikipedia page and make changes/additions. Not ANYONE can publish, speak on behalf of the govt, or appear in the media. A published source has had much more scrutiny because the person put much more effort into it.
"Wikipedia remains a lumpy work in progress. The entries can read as though they had been written by a seventh grader: clarity and concision are lacking; the facts may be sturdy, but the connective tissue is either anemic or absent; and citation is hit or miss. Wattenberg and Viégas, of I.B.M., note that the vast majority of Wikipedia edits consist of deletions and additions rather than of attempts to reorder paragraphs or to shape an entry as a whole, and they believe that Wikipedia’s twenty-five-line editing window deserves some of the blame. It is difficult to craft an article in its entirety when reading it piecemeal, and, given Wikipedians’ obsession with racking up edits, simple fixes often take priority over more complex edits. Wattenberg and Viégas have also identified a “first-mover advantage”: the initial contributor to an article often sets the tone, and that person is rarely a Macaulay or a Johnson. The over-all effect is jittery, the textual equivalent of a film shot with a handheld camera." - Know It All

My plan is to go out to Ventura and start at the same place but head out hwy 33 past Ohai and ride to Pine Mtn. and back. It's the route that Sea to Summit takes. I did it last year and now a restaraunt has opened out there so water and food are available. I'll see what shakes out next week.
